tinaduffyjames
Hi my chickens and eglu arrived this afternoon. I was so excited. Had been awake since 4.45 this morning just thinking about them. 1 beautiul but vocal Miss Pepperpot and 2 equally beautiful gingernut rangers. Edie, Edna and Nellie. I have spent the past hour trying to get them to go into the eglu. I didnt have a torch so put my light on, on the mobile phone and placed the phone in the eglu. But to no avail. So i have spent half hour playing Kerplunk with the run and 12 bamboo canes. Each time I dare try and egde the chickens a bit closer to the door Edna ( the pepperpot ) would jump over the canes. I managed to coax Edie in but once she realised edna and nellie had hopped over my wall of canes she came straight back out again! Anyway, they are all in bed now thank goodness. Hope I dont have this every night. I think I gave the neighbours a laugh anyway. Think I may have met my match with Edna, she is as sharp as anything. On a more serious note, Nellie has been very subdued since arriving. The other 2 have been scratching around and eating etc but Nellie has just been watching. I have seen her drink but she isnt foraging like the other 2. Also I have noticed that she is a bit feather bare under her tail. It is not messy I dont think but she looks like her feathers have been stripped out. Without picking her up I cant tell anymore really and I cant get near her yet. Do you think she is ok? Or should I ring Omlet tomorrow and tell them?
keyhole kate
Sounds as though you have had an eventful evening it will get better they soon learn where there bed is. Nellie is probably a bit unsettled with the move, do they all seem to get on together any pecking, bullying from her mates as for her missing knicker feathers chances are she probably came like that and was possibly being plucked by another in the flock she was with just keep an eye on her for the next few days to make sure that she isent being bullied and plucked by any of her new mates. I am pretty sure she isent There such a worry when there new and your new to keeping them honestly you will be fine they will settle it just takes a few days. Any questions just ask someone will always be around for advice and reassurance KK
Egluntyne
I love the kerplunk scenario. I found that waving a broom in the run got them into the house. Useful if you can get someone to shut the door quickly.
sewitall
I asked the Omlet delivery guy how the chickens were kept before delivery and he said in poly tunnels so perhaps they have never seen an eglu before. I bet you anything that tomorrow night they will be good as gold and go to bed without a fuss.
brambles
What fun! My friends and hen party ladies normally end up in the run to lift them in. My pepperpot is called Edna as well - Eddie! She's a real character too but a bit of an old lady now.
Alis girls
I dont worry if they are in the run - at least they are safe - I'm sure they will go to bed eventually. Nice names - you sound besotted - its happens to us all
