Ashes to Ashes

Recommended Posts

I've just watched this on the BBC iplayer. Slightly confusing, but I took it to mean Gene looked after cops who were on the brink of death, to give them time to get better and choose the right path. One thing I am still confused about is the PC who was buried at the farm. Was that Gene? Or someone he shot? :?

I've just had a read on the Ashes to Ashes Facebook and its made things clearer to me. The body at the farm was actually Gene :( He said to Alex "He didn't deserve such a shallow grave. I didn't deserve it". The nutter who was trying to get them all to hate Gene was the devil and was trying to get them into the lift so they would all go to his department; hell. The police room they all worked in was a half way house before they were ushered off to heaven in the pub. At the very end, when the new chap came in saying "this is my office who's got my iPhone?", Gene looked into the glass door, and saw a reflection of him as the young cop.

Another bit I was confused about...... Sergeant Viv James - the guy who was shot in the prison during the riots...... I am sure Alex told him that he would go on to become the first black police Commissionaire in the future. Does anyone else remember that?

You're confusing Viv with a completely differnet character although they were both black police officers.

No, I don't think she is. I had remembered that too.

Brilliant stuff.

Definitely different.

The chap who was Sam's mentor was a character called Glen Fletcher played by Ray Emmet Brown.

The character in Ashes to Ashes was Viv James, played by Geoff Francis.

We watched Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes, loved them both!

The bit that confused me though was in the earlier Ashes to Ashes series, Alex sees herself as a little girl watching her mother die in the car explosion, and Gene takes (young) Alex away. And what about the policeman she killed and buried?

It was very good though, but I don't think another series would work so well now we know the twist behind it.

It wasn't Gene in real life who took young Alex's hand. Everything that happened in A2A was fantasy.

Similarly, in Life on Mars, Sam saved Annie from being kicked to death by his dad (Vic Tyler)... but in reality, Annie died when Vic attacked her... which is why she was in Gene's world. All police officers in both series were there because they died in violent (or unresolved) circumstances

Hope that makes sense.

It took me a while to get to grips with the final episode and my family were all  at me. I got the heaven and hell bit, but missed the bit about why Viv had been killed. As with the undercover wpc in an earlier episode they had both done wrong so the devil took them. There were a few loose ends, but not surprising really after all this time. I really felt for them all when they realised what was going on. :(

I have loved both Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes, DS went out and bought the sound track albums on Saturday, to all but the first series which we already had. Great music. :D

loved it all! sad its over but yep what a brilliant ending!.........just a bit confused about Sam Tylers storyline in the last episode????

Gene said he had to go, so what had happened to him? he went back to 73 because he took his own life at the end of life on Mars, but then how did his ending tie up? I was having to explain bits to the kids (much to my annoyance!) and missed that bit.

Will really miss Ray and Chris too!! have to get the dvd now and watch again me thinks!

Sam discovered the truth about Gene, and knowing that, he couldn't stay. It seems that once people learn the truth, they have to move on. So he asked Gene to help him fake his own death (which would explain his disappearance to everyone else), then he and Gene went to the Pub (so Sam, and presumably Annie) went into the Railway Arms.

Regarding Sam getting back to 2008 and then choosing to go back to Gene's world by committing suicide.. this wasn't covered in the finale, BUT my belief is that Sam didn't really go back to 2008 at all. Just as in Ashes to Ashes, Alex thought she had woken up from her coma but hadn't. When Sam was "back" in 2008 he couldn't feel anything, not even when he stabbed himself with the pen. I think it was all part of his coming to terms with his death and preparing him to move on to the Railway Arms.

Hope that helps.

A fantastic series and very sad it is finished. Although another series would be great I wonder if it would be the same watching it now we know what happens to everyone? I possibly preferred Life on Mars, but really enjoyed them both. Certainly a firm favourite here :D

We are all huge fans of both series in our house ever since my son when aged 11 was in the opening moments of the very first episode of Life on Mars - (small child in alley shouting abuse at Sam Tyler.) OH chaperoned him on set and chatted to John Sim - said he was a lovely bloke.

When he first went to the audition, we thought it was going to be sci-fi and about space!

Thought the ending was very clever, loved it! Personally I thought Sam did pull through and go back to the present, and then commit suicide to get backto the '70s again, after which he discovered Gene's identity and hence went to the pub. Nice thought, we end our days in the pub!!!!
