batcatz
Hi, I'm making a little frog pond. Just wondered if I can use poly bags from wood chips, compost etc rather than buying a pond liner? It's only small about 2.5 ft x 3.5 ft. Edited May 29, 2010 by Guest
theherd123
I think a pond liner is needed as it is more difficult to puncture than the regular plastic used for compost bags etc. Also you will need to use one complete sheet otherwise the water will drain away. Once you have dug your pond line the hole with a layer of sand to help prevent stones etc from piercing the liner. Good luck with it & dont mention your project to Christian - he adores frogs! batcatz
Thanks! I will pick up a pond liner tomorrow. I have some sand I can use and I'm going to put lots of pebbles at the bottom and gently sloping sides so the froggies can get out. It's also safe from the chooks as I've fenced off the end of the garden for my veg patch. I have a plastic container hidden under ivy with pebbles and a slate over part of it. It has been there a few years now. I checked it when I moved the compost bin and there is a little frog living in there all week. When I dug out the compost I realised the hole I made was perfect size for a little froggie pond and it's already surrounded by bricks in a perfect pond shape. Hehe, will let Christian know if he's not already seen this. Might put some photos on here.
craftyhunnypie
Don't you dare put photos on here or I'll run a mile, along with Christian! We are both well known for our Amphibian phobia. Emma.x

chickencam
Frogs are so cute, we have loads on our allotment, they help to keep the slugs down. We have a pond there and it is heaving with tadpoles this year.

It has mini bullrushes in the middle and a plastic white duck floating on it. Little froggie watched me. Hopefully, more will come. I'm just putting some big flat slate style stone around the edges with gravel and pebbles for now. It's looking good already.
chickencam
We get loads of baby frogs hopping around in the late summer an autumn, they particularly like the strawberry patch. I don't see how you can not like frogs when you see the tiny baby ones. They do make you jump, but jumping is what they do best We have a problem at the allotment because some couch grass has punctured the thin liner which used and it is now growing thickly in the pond. It still holds water but does need topping up in weather like it is now. When the tadpoles have hopped away we will have to emty it out and repair it. We have a pond at home too, but we have goldfish in that, and some lovely plants. Edited to add a couple of pictures of my garden pond. batcatz
Ah, that's a lovely pond. I like all the plants around the edges, are they lobelia? I must get some. I'll try to put a photo of my pond on here later. Froggie hasn't moved in yet. He's still in his little container behind the ivy.
chickencam
The blue plant is a phlox which has been there for a few years and has spread over the stones, it looks really pretty at the moment.
