one egg two broody hens

Recommended Posts

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help please. I have a pekin bantam that is now sitting on her second lot of eggs and it looks like fingers crossed one or two may hatch (yippeee) anytime now. My question is I have an eglu so one nest box and have ordered another coop for when the chicks arrive but my other pekin bantam has now gone broody and is also sitting on the same egg. what will happen if the eggs hatch will they fight to be mum or will they hurt the chicks - suffocate them. i am owrried its day 18 now and my new coop arrives in a day or 2.can anyone offer advice please.thank you.

I'd leave it till the new coop arrives (providing that the chicks are not due to hatch tomorrow or anything)

Then retrieve the stolen egg and give it back to the original broody

Two broodies together can work but they have to be pretty close or problems will occur

hi thanks for that i will when the coop arrives put patsy who was the first brooder into the new coop with the egg. she has been sitting on the egg for 18 days today so what would happen do you think if the chick came out and they were both on it and the new coop had not arrived..i am so stressed for my girls..

there is a risk that the other hen will harm the chick

When the new coop turns up remove the other hen to it not the actual original broody, she shouldnt be disturbed

If the new coop doesnt turn up remove the other one to the run and give her a cat box to sleep in and leave the original broody in the house with the door shut, the chicks dont go anywhere for the first day or so anyway so hopefully your new coop shouldnt be too far away by then

I think if I was you then I would remove the other hen now and do as redwing said and place her in the run with a cat box. Just in case a chick hatches early and they fight. When the new coop comes then pop her in

Good luck
