squidsin
My white pekin is a shadow of her usual self today. She didn't join in the usual mad rush to finish off my toast this morning, and although she's eaten some mealworms, she seems slow and sluggish and not her usual greedy, lively self at all. I've picked her up for a look at her and I'm no expert but I can't see any evidence of injury. She started crouching a week or so ago and I think she's coming into lay. Does this make them sluggish sometimes? It definitely didn't with my insane buff chicken! Could she be egg-bound? If so, what am I meant to do about it? Help! And thanks. Olly
You're right that a quiet hen who isn't interested in treats is probably feeling a bit off-colour. If she's just coming into lay, my best guess would be that she may be laying a soft-shelled egg, which can make them look a bit seedy. I'd keep an eye on her, because it might not be that, but if it is then she will perk up as soon as the egg is out. Sorry, that's not a lot of help, but it's one possibility. squidsin
Thanks Olly. She's eating and drinking so I don't think she's actually on death's door. I'm keeping an eye on her - and I'll look out for softies.
squidsin
She laid an egg - her first! She's just done a proud announcement and I've rewarded her with some mealworms. It wasn't a softie, and she seems happy again now. Hurrah!
