Hen Pecked Duck - help needed

Recommended Posts

Hello, for the last few weeks one of our hens Betsy (who is broody) has been bullying our Duck Maggie on top of her head. It was quite raw but now it seems to be quite purple in colour and she is loosing more hair. Betsy does go for the other duck and chicken occassionally but seems to have it in for Maggie. They all used to play, eat and sleep together quite well. Its seems to happen mostly at meal times (betsy has to be forced off her nest box). Does anyone have any idea how this can stop and whether the wound will naturally clear up or should we do something? Thank you. :(

Hi

I have a broody hen who has lost the plot lately. I just shut her out for the day from the nest area, I tried cold buckets of water etc to no avail.

I dont have a mixed set up like you, but have kept ducks and know of others that keep them mixed. I would seperate either your broody away from the others until she becomes unbroody (this could be a while with the warmer weather etc). Or take the duck out the way to heal its head up. Definitely remove one or other.

Good luck indie

I'd separate the broody to a broody cage to snap her out of it - that way she's not broody anymore (unless you want her to hatch, in which case she'd need to be separated too) and Maggie gets a rest.

Try some anti-peck sprays. I've used the Johnsons one, but have heard good things about the net-tex one :)
