CatieB
Hello I have my first eggs today but is this usual We have had our three girls just over 2 weeks and so they must be about 18 or so weeks. This morning we found two eggs together in the nest box... clever girls An hour or so later we found a tiny egg on the floor of the run so I assumed all three girls had started to lay on the same day ... very clever. Now tonight after they have free ranged I've found a perfect but soft egg on the drive So is it ususal to lay more than one a day and is it odd to be soft and later on in the day? Does the fact it is soft mean anything or just teething problems and newness. Oh and I meant to ask if the other girl will learn to lay in the nest Many thanks. PS egg and chips for tea and they were AMAZING just alot of arguing about who had the small one - mine was double yolked - how come? I don't know how that happens:D EDIT Now 5 days later and no more eggs apart from one girl laying softies every evening - and two one directly after the other last night on our drive way - caught her eating the second one. Now surely this is odd or should we just out it down to her youth and wait and see? Do we need to do anything. HELP.... and thank you Edited June 6, 2010 by Guest
Ain't Nobody Here
Quite normal to have teething problems when they first start . They should get the hang of it soon. Double yolkers are quite common too as are softies. They often lay their first egg or so somewhere odd, as if they're taken by surprise . You can put a golf ball or pot egg in the nest to give them the idea, but they should work it out for themselves .
Olly
All ofthose - soft egg, small egg, more than one egg in a day and a double-yolker- are typical of a young hen coming into lay. It's just because they haven't quite settled into it yet - you could get small eggs followed by massive double-yolkers for a week or two. I wouldn't be too concerned unless the soft-shelled eggs go on beyond these first couple of weeks.
Millie-Annie
Rather than start a new thread thought would ask on here, is it also normal for them to stop and start to begin with? Marigold laid her first egg on Saturday, then every day until Weds, nothing yesterday and nothing today? She is fine and lively though
Ain't Nobody Here
Yes, it can happen. She should settle into a routine soon enough, hopefully .
CatieB
Thanks for the replies The same is happening with us.. after them all laying on the first day (how odd - do they encourage one another) we then only got one tiny egg late yesterday and again one today. I'm hoping its just settling in

CatieB
I have added to the post - see above - please can anyone help because we don't know whether to leave it to wait and see or whether we need to do anytning
jennydavies
I have the same with our girls, they are very, very erratic at first. We have had softies on some days, perfect eggs on other days and then none for a week or so and then the same all over again. Nothing to worry about, they just have to have time to get all the egg-laying tackle in order. One of ours didn't lay until last week and we have had her seven weeks. Sometimes they go in the nest-box and come back out without laying anything....patience
