migsy
My Black Rock has started crouching when I approach her. Does this mean she might start to lay soon? If so, does anyone know how long it might be before she lays? I'm getting impatient. No eggs yet.
JanTheDiver
Yes she should lay fairly soon but it is hard to put a definite time scale on it. She might have some practice runs in the nest first without actually producing anything, but it's very exciting when you get your first one Good luck and hope it's soon
JulesL
I bought a Blue Haze 2 weeks ago who should now be about 26 weeks old. She started crouching last weekend but hasn't laid yet. I'm getting impatient too - plus I'm struggling with just one egg laid a day - I need more!
migsy
She's laid!
sezra
Hurray! I only got my hens two days ago but I am so looking forward to when they start laying! What do you do with the first egg? I feel like it will be so precious I wont want to eat it! Was your first one a softie?
migsy
Sezra, I've had my hens for 3 weeks. The first egg looked just like one out of a box but a little smaller than I usually buy. It has a nice firm shell. It is safely in the fridge now but my 4 year old insisted on showing it to his teacher at nursery and I was worried he would break it as he held it all the way. I have 3 boys and they have a chicken each (in theory - of course I look after them!), so the "owner" of the one who laid it will eat it scrambled when he gets home later! I can't wait for more! sezra
so the "owner" of the one who laid it will eat it scrambled when he gets home later! How lovely! How do you know which one laid it? I think I can tell which of mine will lay first as one is alot more mature than the others. I guess you can tell by the colour? I am guessing alot of things at the moment as everything is new to me! migsy
I saw her do it! I was cleaning the eglu so the droppings tray and the roosting bars were out. I saw her a bit puffed up on the garden border and a couple of minutes later I noticed an egg there! I was so surprised to find it where I did. Hopefully, she will lay in the coup next time.
