my chickens dont have names

Recommended Posts

well ive had my chickens just over a week now and they still dont have any names

first off i cant tell them apart  i have 3 gingers and they all look identical to me and i have 3 black ones 1 which has a ginger neck so shes easy but the other 2 look the same

is it bad chicken etiquette not to have names? i just call them collectivley 'chickens' and they dont seem to mind :anxious:

I think that you can name them, or not as you feel. I'm not sure how you can tell them apart when talking about them to people though??!?

As for telling them apart - we had two Miss Pepperpots when we first got our chickens. My OH could never tell the difference between them! I found that if you looked at their comb they had slightly different patterns of light and dark at the base of their comb. It is harder with GNR, though as they have only a slight colour difference between the base of the comb & their skin under the feathers. Good luck!

Or perhaps you'll notice the difference between their responces & likes/dislikes. They have very distinct personalities!

Enjoy

Im sure your chickens wont mind if they dont have names but as suggested leg rings would be a good idea esp if you need to idenifty a chicken at times of worming, visits to the vets etc.

Even though my chickens have names i usually just call them 'the girls' 8)

Good luck with your chicken keeping adventures 8)

My two black rocks looks the same from the back and even the side but from the beak down they are different - and over time I have learnt to tell Cissie and Ada apart; even from the fluffy bottom aspect. So name them - you'll soon tell them apart.

We got our chickens last saturday, they are warrens and all look very similar. We put coloured rings on their legs as i took put them in the run for the first time (rings from pets at home) and named them all. I'm glad we did because we can already see their personalities coming out, and aswell if one of them was to get ill (as they all look quite similar) we would easily be able to keep track of it so i would recommend it and you could have lots of fun naming them hehe...

The rings are quite cheap at pets at home but have 2x 5 colours, but you can get more off ebay.

I have 6 chickens named as followed, with ring colours:

Nugget- Blue (Leader of the pack - i can tell this already)

Kiev - Pink ( 2nd in command)

Popcorn - Blue ring one leg, yellow on the other

Dipper - Purple

Tikka - Green

Yolk - Yellow obviously ( Yolk is the most independent one so is probably the bottom of the ladder) she tends to stay more on her own and when i forgot to put the eggport door on she was found hanging out and balancing - i bet she is the one that jumps on top and poos on the cube :-D

but anyway if you have some name ideas i would definately name them now, use rings to identify them and you will recognise who's personality is whose.

(and yes i know all my food related names are a bit sadistic :-D):dance::dance:

My chickens not only have names but they actually come to their own name.... If I call one she will be there with the others following lol. If I call out girls girls then they all come like bats out of hell. Even Bam Bam the faverolles waddles in a run so funny. She is a heavy breed and very big x Hilda is a rescued ex batt from December 09 and still scrawny and Oopsy is an exbatt that I rescued 2 years ago, she is dappled and very pretty. Henretta is a darker brown exbatt and as she was poorly when I rescued her she is very tame. The 2 new girls are called Fleur and Tufty. They are merrydale crested. Tufty has a much darker crest then Fleur who should be a model xxxxx

My girls knew their own names too. I am glad someone else posted that, as I thought I was the only one who thought it.

How easy are leg rings to put on? I can tell Lyla and Rene apart whilst they have only patchy feathers but not sure will be able to once they are looking healthier.
