phil turner
Hi guys, I have two chicks, Curry and Chips about a year old, Chips is fine and lays a smashing egg most days. Curry is a different matter, all she seems to do is lay eggs with out shells or just a goey mess. this has been going on for about four to five weeks now. I have now (two days ago) confined them to the fixed run supplied with the eglo plus a mtr extention to see if they would feed on the pellets. I used to let them out onto another fenced off section during the day which is about two mtrs long by about 1 mtr wide. Ihave been trying to feed her some layers mash with added crushed egg shells in as they don't seem to want to eat standard grit, she picks out the mash and leaves any shells/grit behind, and this morning we saw her say on the nest for about two hours but with the same result. I'm quite concerned also that she might be eating what she is producing but not been able to prove that yet. Ive even put a blanket over the run close to the eglo to make it a bit darker in there so she can't see her produce to eat. I've just separated them and given them both some layers mash and oyster and mixed grit, chips went mad for it and curry just didnt want to know, in fact she stood in it. I have also noticed that she keeps depositing nasty looking fluid from her back end. Ive just put in some cooked chopped potato peelings which they both went for but not with grit in it please help
Lavenders_Blue
I have a girl that often lays a soft shelled egg. I have bought some Calcivet from my local animal/pet shop which is a liquid calcium and vitamin D supplement (I think Zolcal D and Davinova are other brands which are more or less the same thing). I tend to splosh some onto a treat such as a few pieces of grape or chopped cucumber and feed to my poorly girl. I sometimes get a thin shelled egg but I've not have another softie since using this. It might work for you?
phil turner
Hi as an update, She was so poorly I took her to the vet as she just didnt seem interested in any thing and just sat down all day, The vet confirmed she was not well at all. It appeared that for starters she was egg bound and the vet pulled out a lot of egg stufff out of her also saying that she might also have something called coxitus or thats what it sounded like, also she is very thin and under weight. any way she's now had a couple of jabs including an antibiotic and I've got some worming liquid and general tonic to add to her water for a few days. I've brought her home and given her a bath and now she is settled back in the roost, we'll just have to wait and see if she recovers now, fingers crossed.
