Mollie333
Her sister passed away, now she is very quiet, but she used to be such a lively character, she is cuddled in a corner and doesnt seem to be walking much, her feet look fine, but she isn't walking on them. she doesnt get on with the other chickens that much, only broody effy (she sometimes sits on Pat) What shall i do? I got her in today and she was eating cheese and corn. but im worried about her not walking around much and staying in the coop..
Plum
Poor Pat guess she's grieving or maybe nervous of the fox. Perhaps she'll mix more with your other bantams in time.

Plum
Mollie I keep thinking about Pat. How is she?
Mollie333
Hi Plum, She isn't looking good to be honest. We went to the vets with her yesterday, and the vets checked her pooh for parasites and the like, and she didnt have any. he checked her legs and wings and said 'shes fine, no broken bones' she is eating the broody food, tinned sweetcorn or corn soaked in water (for about 6 hours). She is not loosing weight, but isn't walking propperlly.. the vet was a special avian vet, but i don't think hes right on ''shes fine''. Another vet passing said that if a bird gets ill, the first things to go is there legs. So she perscribed us some antibiotics incase of any illness. You wouldn't belive this bloke was a avian specialist. He also said that Silkies arn't healthy birds. But she is looking a teeny bit better. She was cuddling up to Effy my broody (sitting on four eggs), Effy didn't seem to mind. She just needs to strenghten her legs. Thanks for asking x
Plum
What a worry. I suppose it's good there was nothing obvious or bad they found but she must be brewing something. Hope she picks up on the antibiotics. Which vet do you use?
Mollie333
Amby Vet in Heanor.. She still is eating; But not getting better.
Plum
Sorry to hear she's not back on her legs yet but good she is eating. I read that being low on calcium weakens legs, did the vet consider that Chris is vet at Ilkeston who is knowledgeable about poultry. Mollie333
Thankyou Plum. Anything that i can put in the food/water to get more calcium into her?
Plum
Limestone flour you get from horsey places put a teaspoon in with pellets and a dollop of codliver oil helps them utilise the calcium. I gave mine a short course of zolcalD which is calcium and Vit D supplement for birds. Its a liquid and if I remember rightly you use 1.5ml a day for a hybrid size chicken. There are others which I think you find with the supplies for parrots. Broccoli has calcium but not sure its in a form that's readily used by chickens. Mollie333
Thanks Plum We think it might be Mareks Disease!! seperated her from the other girls. she has all the symptoms except loosing weight.. to fingers crossed she hasn't got mareks.. Plum
I'm sorry, it seems to be a problem with Silkies. Chick wiggle lost her silkie sweetpea this weekend to a disease that sounded like Mareks. I thought there was a treatment but reading up there's not but some survive. I really hope it's not that and she gets over it.
