Guest
My broody Betty has given up on the 3 fertile duck eggs. I separated her from her friend Bob and she was fine until today and has stayed off the eggs. I don't know what to do. Incubators can't be used because we have nowhere to put one. The eggs are cold so I don't know what to do I'm afraid I might have to kill the eggs.
tom123
Is Betty still semi-broody? If so shut her with the eggs in the coop (IN THE SHADE!) and leave her in there until tomorrow and let her out for a quick drink, snack and poo and shut her back in. See if this puts her back in the mood. If it doesn't put a help post out to anyone near you who has an incy. I would lend you mine but I'm too far away. What stage are the eggs at?? Guest
She is fully broody. Eggs are on their 18th day i think. They are due on the 10th. She is now sitting on them because bob is sat with her. What we are going to do is when the eggs are due to hatch on the 10th we are going to create a brooder.

I will move betty by herself 2 days before the hatch and then when and if they hatch i will put them in a brooder.

tom123
Why are you going to separate the ducklings from her at hatch? I can tell you it will be a hello of a lot harder and messier to raise them yourself and it is a bit cruel on her. I think it's a Silver Laced isn't it Josh? A boy whatever it is! joza2210
Yes Silver Laced Oh no not a boy
Guest
She gets depressed away from Bob. I separated her but she refused to sit on the eggs. It is hard to make a decision because she doesn't like being away from Bob but she also doesn't like being away from the eggs.
tom123
I think I would separate her from the others a couple of days before the hatch and shut her in the house while they hatch. I wouldn't remove the ducklings because, as stated earlier, they are really messy inside and will need cleaning out 2-3 times a day, no exaggeration! Guest
Oh well ok I will do that. 2-3 days before ? She might settle down when she knows their going to hatch. We have found a home for the ducklings if they hatch. When if they hatch at what age could their go to their new home ?
tom123
I would say about day 25/6 would be perfect. They could leave her at about 4 weeks old but she could stay with them for another 2-3 weeks after that.
Guest
Ok thanks. I will probably go halfway and say 5-6 weeks.

Lewis
I hatched Orville under a broody hen - he's pretty much off heat at 2 or 3 weeks old, but can stay with her for longer Good luck
