Eglu Cube, auto door, walk in run for sale South West London

I've been looking at "Walk in Runs" and it occurs that, although nice, I dont actualy need to be able to walk in it.

Has anyone tried to get a run from anywhere that only 3 feet high?

Would the chickens mind?

We had a low level run (currently building a WIR) the main problems are cleaning it (unless you're moving it around frequently) and reaching a chicken in it when there's a problem.

 

We're also putting in perches at different levels so the girls have more to do. But I guess if your chickens have good free ranging time that wont be such an issue. Ours only have an outdoor run and when we're on holidays they might only have access to the WIR.

I use the height of my WIR for my girls' benefit (although being able to walk in it is a bonus for me!). They obviously prefer being up high and always sleep right up by the roof.

If you have a choice, then go for one you can easily get in and out of. You'll regret it if you end up crawling around in chicken poo on a regular basis!

It would work fine if the roof hinges up so you can walk through it - I envisage a long narrow run perhaps running around your garden instead of borders.

Oooo a hinged roof is a good idea, but i must admit, my girls do like to be able to jump around and be high up

Framebow sell all different sizes of runs, and can do a hinged top. My rabbit house and run came from them it is excellent quality

I have a couple of small runs that are about 3.5ft high

 

I made the whole front so it can be removed for cleaning then used hasp and staple metal things to attach the front to the sides so its all secure then I put a small door with a bolt in the front for daily changing of water drinker etc..

 

When I need to clean the run the whole front comes off and I reach in with a shovel

My run is about 3.5 foot high and crawling round in it is no fun. cleaning out isn't too bad as I rake everything to the door then shovel it out to wherever it is going. Putting new floor covering in is easy enough as the chooks spread it round for me. I would love a WIR but it isn't going to happen anytime soon.

I have some 4ft high runs for the quail. They are only small so getting in and out isn't bad. I wouldn't fancy collecting stray eggs from a 3ft high run though.
