oooh! I've wanted to make Cider for such a long time

Recommended Posts

When I was at University, my friend from Shetland used to brew cider on her window sill and then strain the finished brew through an old pair of clean (I'm making a presumption here!) tights. When it was produced at parties, only those who could really hold their drink went anywhere near it. Potent and very dangerous stuff! To be honest, I didn't try any because I couldn't quite get the image of tights and cider out of my head - yeuch.

our local wine circle reckons you can make wine from cartons of grape juice so i don't see why cartons of apple juice wouldn't work for cider.

I wish i liked cider as i would give this a try but i can't stand the stuff!

I'm really tempted to make this - would be worth a try with the cheap juices, nothing to loose!

Don't have any of the stuff but their demi-john is cheaper than I expected!

Might be a summer thing to try 8)

Let us know how you got on Ygerna + Tracy :D

I'm glad you posted that link Lewis - I bought some similar ones about 3 years ago from the Home Brew shop in Studley - when I went back for some more he told us that the manufacturer had had to stop making them because of some dispute with a very famous Cola maker. They are much easier to handle than the glass ones.

I bought Budgens own brand of 'pressed apple juice, not from concentrate' this morning, and will be getting this together this afternoon. :D Its just off the cold shelf, one litre tetrapak stuff, not organic or anything special.

Will keep you posted. :D

I used the Yeast that was linked in, via the recipe they sent, I am sure its the one you have in the link in your post. :D

As for a syphon, I have one here somewhere anyway, but, not at a stage where I will need it, if at all.

As for the Cider experiment. At the end of day two the fermentation is going really well, actually, maybe a little too well, the bubbles are pushing up through the airlock very rapidly, however, as I've never made this before I don't know if this is usual, or not. The apple juice/cider is also much cloudier today. Again, not sure if that is as it should be so will just leave it to do whatever it is it needs to do.

Mine didnt clear but the activity stopped completely so I've bottled it up, adding the teaspoon of sugar to the bottle. Will wait till thats dissolved before trying it though. It smelt like the scrumpy I used to drink as a young adult so that was promising.

we drank the first batch of turbo cider :shock:

its a bit strong :shock::shock:

I had 3 small glasses (probably large wine glass size) and I KNEW I had had a drink

the pear looks very dodgy :? i think that will be tried (very tentatively) and then probably disposed of :( it really looks like sludge (think of that dishwasher cleaner advert - and you will know what I mean :vom: )

but, im going today to make some more of this stuff :D:D (well, its Christmas soon isnt it :lol: )
