ScottishMike
We're looking after a relatives 2 ex bat hens for 3 weeks Nice orange eglu with a standard run. The girls stay in the run while we are at work, and get out to free range around the garden in the evenings and weekend. They are totally used to me now, and run over to me as soon as they see me, hoping for some corn My aim has been, for several years now, to keep hens - and it very nearly came to fruition a few years ago thanks to a member on here - but that fell through - and now the Mrs has absolutely put her foot down, and depsite the 3 kids and me all lobbying for hens, she's having none of it So, this is now how I get my annual fix of looking after hens - just offer them a holiday home whenever these rellies are on holiday
Redwing
Excellent, do you think this experience may make her waver? Good to hear from you, your sense of humor and posts have been missed
ScottishMike
*waves* Oh, don't get me started on hoping that the hens would win her over I had hoped that having them around would prove several things - they aren't noisy. They aren't smelly. They don't annoy the neighbours (actually the neighbours moaned when the hens left last year - they missed them! ) Despite having proved all the above, and despite enjoying the eggs they provided us with last year (nadda this year, but they are getting on a bit these hens), she just ain't budging Oh well, annual holidy hen fix will have to do - and it's really no hardship in the summer anyway - a daily clean up of the eglu and the run, lift any doings left from the freeranging, dump it all in the composter. Easy!

ScottishMike
Lots of sqawking in the garden tonight - went out to find a cat in the garden Chased the little beggar off and got some sweetcorn out to try and calm the chooks down. Bluebell settled down very quickly, but Sylvia took a bit more sweet talking before she stopped sqawking and dropped her head and got back to her normal self. ScottishMike
Well, the hens went home after almost a month with us. They only gave us 3 eggs in that time, and in return they nicked the only 3 strawberries our two little strawberry plants had produced
