jill the potter
to bring home my new chicks. Have just been to Barnoldswick to a small holding and looked at some 6/7 week old chicks. Picked out a light sussex and a 'sandy' - part cream legbar - hybrid. Decided that they were too young to bring back with us (also have not rigged up somewhere separate for them to stay. Will partition off half of the WIR and then create some sort of sleeping quarters. Do you think a small wooden box would suffice? - I think I could knock that up myself. Then I thought I might leave it a month or so and they go and pick them up.................or maybe I should leave it till we get back from our holiday the first week in September? My head says yes but my heart says...........go and get them!!!!!!!
scarlettohara
Go and get them, I got 2 bantam chicks a week ago - they are 7 weeks now and no problem to look after. I have them in a separate eglu and run, the big girls are in a WIR. If you separate them in your run they will be happy in a cat basket or similar to sleep in (they don't need to perch until older) - they do everything big girls do just on a smaller scale However they will need to be at least 18 weeks before you integrate them all together. jill the potter
Oooo I'm very tempted. They were soooo cute!
Plum
What are you waiting for? They will be settled and happy by the time you go on holiday
jill the potter
ooo do you think I should? They will be 12/13 weeks when we go away. Do you think they will be big enough and have integrated by then. I would hate to go away and leave someone with a problem
Roobaloo
You probably wouldn't want to intergrate them before you go, they'd still be quite young...plus there'd a risk of something flared up while you were away...but if you've got them set up in their own section, then it'd be no extra work really for whoever looks after them while you're away!! Plum
Yes you should and you'll have all the fun of watching them develop but agree with Roobaloo to keep them seperate. I go away in September but oh dear I haven't told my chickensitters the news yet
jill the potter
My brother is visiting for a few weeks and he's going to make me a small wooden sleeping box for them to fit in the WIR so maybe I could go for them soon What do you think the size should be? I was thinking it would always then come in handy for sick or broody chicken later. Will partition off the WIR so old girls can still go outside, but new ones will stay in WIR. Sounds like a plan don't you think? Don't know wether to stick with the curry theme for names - Balti & Bhuna ????? Maybe I will wait till I get them home. (still thinking about the wyandottes though Plum )
