Cube Mark One Run

Spoke to Lewis tonight and he is coming to build my WIR on 1st September and it is my birthday. I guess that means OH will say I am not getting any other pressies but that will be ok I cant wait, I have to start preparing the base now.

 

Have ordered some new hens for 10th September, has anyone got any good ideas for dividing up a WIR for intros. I didnt really want a permanent separation put in and might end up just using the eglu run attached to the eglu.

Oh you are lucky - he is too far away from where I live to be able to build a WIR for me so I am really struggling trying to find anyone in Northwest area who can offer the same service - have you ordered a coop table as well they look well cool. Can't really help with segregating run as never had to do it but have seen pics of others using eglu run for introduction of new chicks. Post some pics of your WIR when its done please - xx

We are having one built next month and also want to be able to divide ours up for any intros. We are having a door at either end of the run so that we will be able to hopefully put a temporary barrier across the middle of the run and be able to access both halves. If it works is another matter entirely, I guess it all depends how high they can get inside a run

I think I will probably do the same and sort something out with the eglu or cube run I hadn't thought of two doors but that could be useful OH keeps having very random ideas about barriers but my girls can fly quite high even with their wings clipped so I would rather be safe than sorry

I've changed the design of my WIR so many times it's been keeping me awake at night

 

We just thought with 2 doors, even if we only use one, at least it's there if we ever need it and it's only another £25 for an additional door. Also as our run is quite long it means in the bad weather we can use the door nearest the house rather than going right to the far end of the garden. Are you having the egg hatch or any other things added to make it easier for you

Yes I think Lewis will be sick of me changing things I am having the cube on the outside but lewis said the eglu would be more fox proof inside so that is going on a table with an egg port and a door to clean it out added I keep having more brilliant ideas for it though (normally in the middle of the night like you)

Our Cube, when we get it, and also our Eglu will be on the inside. One reason is that I'm worried about the Cube leaking as I've heard stories of that. However I know it's going to make it easier to clean if it's outside and short of having a huge opening it's going to have to be cleaned inside and if that is hard then my OH is going to have to do it as it was his idea to have it inside

 

What size of run are you having Once again I've changed the size of ours about half a dozen times

I've had my cube a while with no leaks so am not worried about mine leaking although I have heard that some do. Mine is going to be 15ft square but I am clearing the area this weekend so once I can get to it properly (without trees in the way) it may change how big is yours? OH thinks it is massive but I want to have room for as many extra chooks as possible

I've made an introduction pen from my cube runs, taken to basic pieces and put together creatively

The roof lifts up so I can walk in but I made a small wood panel door. I've also cut up vinyl banners to make it an isolation unit for the first week or two.

Amazing how much fun you can have with some wire panels. It's like playing with the kids lego

That looks great I'm not sure I am as talented as you but I work in a school so have 6 weeks to play with bits of wire now and see what I can create

Plum that is a very good idea, comparing it to playing with Lego is good, I used to love Lego when I was little

 

Clare our run is going to be 24ft by 6ft, although at times I wonder if the 6ft is too narrow and have changed my mind tons of times. Our idea at the moment is to put a fence a few feet in front of the run all the way along and then across the back of the garden so that the hens can free range in there without going into our flower beds. Our garden is about 60ft by 32ft but along the whole of one side we already have a garage, a shed behind that, then a swing behind that and a Summer House behind that, so the whole of one side is full already We think if we come out too far on the other side we will be encroaching too much onto the garden so we've already taken down a few trees so that the run can go right up in the corner with the long length coming towards the house and stopping just a few feet short of our arbour, which we can't move as our conservatory comes out on that side of the house.

 

We have had to fill in our garden pond to make room for the run and I think our next job will be to get some oak sleepers to put underneath the run. That will take some time as they are very heavy I think

We are getting some bantams and we are planning to use the cube run to divide the WIR. We have taken off the end panel with the door, plus one side panel attached at right angles, and are going to put this into the WIR to make a 1 metre square pen. The big girls will be FR during the day so the banties can have the WIR to themselves, and at night they will be separated off. Only occasionally will the banties be left in their smaller run. We hope they will fully integrate.

 

Haven't got a piccy yet, but will post when I have one.

I would advise you to make it covered. My little tiny wyandottes can climb up the sides and flap out.

Sorry Ive been having laptop problems I have been very busy filling it with 5 new girls, 2 skylines, a white star, bluebelle and an amber. Will post pics when I can work out how. Hopefully later!
