feemcg
Sitting here in our ' country house' in Abington, which overlooks a field then the railway line. Became aware of cars lining up and parking outside the house then people getting out and taking photos and videos of a train sitting stationary. Realised it was a steam train, and more people are stopping and flashes going off everywhere. OH away out to find out more! Any ideas what it could be? bronze
Any ideas what line it is?
feemcg
Its the main line, usually the Virgin trains are flying past and we don't take any notice. OH went out and spoke to one of the chaps and its the 'Duchess of Hamilton'. He said it hasn't come north for many years and it had paying passengers on board (£400!) for the trip to Glasgow. He - and many others - had followed it up the motorway from Preston and they were all really excited when it stopped. Some of them walked over the field to take pics and were talking to the railwaymen - there was a big bunch of them too! It sat for about an hour then steamed off towards Lanark. ubereglu
Well I'm not Dan, but my Dad loves trains. It sounds a bit like a steam Gala was taking place. We had one of those a few months ago at Pen Mill station and another one a few weeks ago at Yeovil Junction.
Linda
Oh yes, certain locomotives can be a huge draw for those who are interested. I went on a trip on 29th January 2005 to Pwllheli via the Barmouth Bridge. It was the first loco-hauled train to go over the Barmouth Bridge for a good number of years and really brought the crowds out! The scenery was stunning and the trip really did feel as though it had a sense of occasion.
feemcg
Hi Daniel - I knew you'd know all about it! I read up a bit about it last night and it said it had been to America for the World Trade Fair in 1939, had the streamlining removed in 1947 and was purchased by Butlins in 1964 for display at their holiday camps! I'm afraid I didn't notice if it was streamlined or not, but then I wouldn't have known that was something to look out for! Ah well, nice to know I've seen a wee bit of history. feemcg
Looks like the chap from Preston followed the wrong train , either that or my OH picked him up wrong (surely not, my OH is always right ). Thanks for the info Dan, very interesting.

ubereglu
My Dad makes narrowgauge model trains and his model railway group have a huge track in an old chicken shed out at Martock!!! Dan, are you going to the Dorset get together? If you are you could take a detour with my Dad and look at their trains, I'm sure you'd like it!
