sjp
I'd say a Cherry Plum - Myrobolan as it's starting to ripen this is the best photo I can find http://www.hedgenursery.co.uk/product/myrobalan-prunus-cerasifera-40-60cms-bare-root-1yr-old-10-ld-pack-of-25-H40PRUCLD.html
Charlottechicken
Cathy, just wondered if this tree is growing wild or has been planted? I've come back from shopping this morning on the train and part of the planting around a station I used has a similar tree on it. My mum said it looked like a Siberian crab apple. Depends on the size and hardness of the fruit I suppose. Can't hurt to cut one of the riper fruits in half and see if it has pips or a stone, plums and apples have a similar leaf to us non horticulturists
Couperwife
its on the side of the road, a sort of planted by the council type thingy its a plum type fruit, its not hard, and has a stone in the middle of it im inclined to go with the cherryplum type thing (that means we can pick tons and make fruity vodka with it - or jam ) thanks for the answers people i didnt think that the council would plant poisonous trees, but i wanted to be sure what i was thinking about eating cathy x
