Chickendoodle Posted July 30, 2010 Share Posted July 30, 2010 My 2 dogs got into the garage yesterday and managed to get into the box which held their treats - it was a half full box of dried dog sausages with about 1 1/2 kilos left.(it usually has another box on top of it for safety but this had been left off) Naturally they scoffed the lot. My dogs are both labradoodles so they are roughly labrador sized (taller slimmer versions of a labrador really). Daisy suffered no ill effects at all and obviously has a cast iron stomach. About 6 hours after the incident we noticed that Henry was starting to look very uncomfortable - he was panting and his stomach was starting to expand quite noticeably to the extent that he had trouble sitting down.. He was sick as well (mostly almost complete sausages - he must have just swallowed them rather than chewing). We called the vet and she said to bring him in straight away as large chested dogs can twist their stomachs when this sort of thing happens which can be fatal. He was x-rayed almost immediately and luckily he did not have a twisted stomach but it was very very full of sausage and gas! He was kept in at the vets overnight where they monitored him closely and reassured us that the vet was on call and would operate immediately if they suspected a problem. We have heard today that we can go and pick him up later - he has stopped being sick after having a few bouts overnight but has a rather explosive rear end! You just don't imagine that this sort of thing can be fatal. Luckily our story has a happy ending but I hope it might help someone else to consult the vet if a similar thing happens. Seagazer Posted July 30, 2010 Share Posted July 30, 2010 Oh goodness, your poor dogs I'm glad they haven't suffered too much as twisted gut can be a killer. Hopefully Henry will have learnt his lesson. I have a goldendoodle and she is a complete pig when it comes to food. She used to eat my hubby's socks. She always rifles through the waste paper bin in the hope of finding food that the kids have dumped. She's terrible walking along the road and trying to eat dropped food on the pavement. Daisy is a rescu doodle and we have had her 5 months - she is not quite so good - I think she would have been the ringleader, she got off scott free and poor Henry had to suffer the consequences! Gamebird Posted July 30, 2010 Share Posted July 30, 2010 One of my Labs ate 7kgs of horse feed (obviously, unbeknown to me at the time) which resulted in bloat (gastric torsion). Luckily I recognised the symptoms - panting, drooling, wanting to stretch and a stomach like a balloon. His stomach had started to rotate but I rushed him to the vets and after a 3 hour operation to remove the impacted food and re-organise his stomach, he was saved. It is one of those times when the sooner you get them to the vets the better the outcome and something not to be ignored. It was a very scary time because I thought I was going to lose him. Jazz isn't greedy but Tali nudges the door into the spare bedroom and sticks her head into the bag of mixer which we keep in there, luckily we notice she's missing as it goes quiet...... Some firend have the loveliest bull mastiff pup - he has the most gorgeous personality but is a complete dustbin.. I swear he'd eat one of their children if they stood still long enough.
