chickensuep
I adopted 3 ex batts 11 days ago. They seem fairly happy with not too much bullying and free range all day until 5-6pm. When they first arrived we had 3 eggs a day for the about 5 days then it went down to one. Is this normal and will they start laying again? They get plenty of visitors who give them treats (mixed corn, worms, sweetcorn, raspberries and strawberries). Is there such a thing as too many treats, although they seem to be eating plenty of their ex batt crumb. Thanks for any advise.
majuka
I think the laying of ex batts can be very variable, one of our girls stopped after just a month whilst others have laid for almost a year after coming to us. If they are free ranging are you sure that they are not just laying anywhere as it can take a while to get used to nest boxes, we found the odd egg under bushes etc. Everything is very new to them so it may take some time to get into a routine, having said that, for several to stop all at once and so quickly, it may well be the amount of treats that you are giving, it would be interesting to see what happens if you were to reduce their treats a bit. Good luck with them, ex batts are just amazing to watch blossom.
Mercedes55
I also have some ex batts and I've had them for just over a month now. I was told it's common for them to lay when you first get them home as they will still have eggs in their system and then they often stop until they are settled in. I have read that you can give them too many treats and I don't think they actually need them as long as they are getting their crumbs or pellets. Having said that I can't resist giving mine treats every day, but I wait till late afternoon before I feed them. I'm sure someone with more experience of ex batts will be able to give you proper advice
Tweety
yes, you can definitely give them too many treats! It is early days, and they are probably still settling down in their new home, but I would stop the treats for now and let them fill up on ex batt crumbs. Once things are back to normal, you can give them a treat late in the day but I would be sparing with them.
chickensuep
Thanks. I will definately stop the treats for now. My daughter has just informed me that Shelley now has diarrhoea. We will have to put a notice on the door to the garden as their home is a courtyard garden as my husband's office. They have plenty of fans who like to visit and give them treats. A bit of tough love is in order I think.
