Dolly
I've bought some limestone flour from our local horse shop as recommended on the forum, but I'm not sure how, or how much to feed. It's only for one hen who has recently laid her first soft shelled egg, followed by a completely shell free egg! I hear it's not good for the hens who don't really need the extra calcium (the other 2 have rock hard shells), so would it be ok to feed the one hen, say a few treats tossed in a pinch of the flour, so I know shes the only one eating it? Thanks
Egluntyne
It would. I'd give her more than a pinch though. I'd add a teaspoonful to a bowl of porridge made with pellets and water, or drop some corn into a dollop and shake to coat it, then feed to her. Add a bit of cod liver oil too, as the Vit D3 will help with the metabolising of the calcium.
Dolly
Thanks Egluntyne! I'll get some cod liver oil asap and feed her separately
Bramble
Wow, what a great question, was wondering the same myself!! I have three girls, I think two lay everyday (more or less) but one lays much less frequently and often has a thin/soft shelled egg. I can't be certain who is the "culprit" but I have started the porridge/limestone flour/cod liver oil routine ( ) and the choox certainly enjoy it!
