Hi all

 

Going to stick my neck out here, and ask, has anyone ever gone back to wood after trying plastic housing? I don't know what it is, but my cube is just not growing on me. I wanted one desperately, and now that I've got it, I just don't get one with it. I don't know why, but I'm borderline deciding whether to go back to my wooden house. My wooden house is simple and a doddle to clean. (Although I have to say I've never had to fight THE MITE yet in it). Am I mad? Do I need to give it more time? Please tell me there are others out there that secretly has wondered the same!?

I've not had wooden housing but I have seen a fair bit of my neighbours. I've only ever had plastic. A solway, an eglu and a Green frog. Of the 3 plastic ones I prefer the green frog one. So maybe if a cube is not for you then other plastic houses may be?

 

At least you know with omlet housing there is a strong market for it and they hold their value well.

If anything we are going back to plastic from wood.

 

We have got an eglu but with wanting to get more hens we decided to get a small wooden hut for the new girls. At first the new girls got on with it fine, same with the older girls but a picture always tells a story......

 

The wooden house is used during the day by the girls to lay their eggs but on a night time..... all 10 girls squeeze into the eglu literally.

 

On investigating further we found out why..... red mite in the wooden house (despite always red mite powdering and spraying it). So after cleaning, scrubbing, powdering both houses and girls we hoped this would help with the night time routine but to no avail. So we have ordered the cube ..... hoping it keep the girls all happy together and red mite free.

I have sold two Eglus to pay for posh incubators

 

I did already have a lot of wooden houses/hutches anyway so it wasnt a move back as such

 

A well designed wooden housing is a joy to clean and not a great deal different for search and destroy red mite missons than a plastic house

 

A badly designed wooden house is a nightmare to own in every way, swelling wood, flimsy rotting roofs, rotting floors, hard to clean and a red mite haven

 

If you choose carefully then there isnt a great deal in it

 

In saying that the Eglus I still have are an absolute joy to clean

 

It seems that the red mite problem that you have has switched you off a bit, if you can beat that then things will look up

Well, Heidi- Hi, if you decide the cube is not for you, do pm me as I was second on the list to have it from Bron. ( Not that I'm opportunist or anything!) But I suspect you'll get over it. Sadly for me....

I imagine that if anyone goes from an eglu or cube to wooden housing, it would only be because of the extent of their chicken addiction!

I've decided to go back to wood... I gave my chickens a 'test run' in my wooden house, and they took to it straight away, and I feel alot happier
