Earlier this evening I saw two beautiful spitfires as they approached Northolt. They put on bit of a display, banking wingtip to wingtip. I knew they were coming from the sound over the houses, it can be thrilling living here sometimes. We also get Lancasters circling low and I so hope to see one this weekend, the ground and sky just throbs. I can also recognise the sound of a chinook, one of my favourite aircraft. I go to the RAF museum Hendon regularly, can't get enough of the aircraft. Love standing under the Vulcan. Has anyone else seen the B52 at Duxford - incredible.

I grew up close to RAF Coningsby where the Battle of Britain memorial planes are housed so we often used to get a private air show over the garden 8)

Yes, I went to Duxford a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it :D My Dad came with me, he spent over 30 years in the RAF and once upon a time worked on the Vulcan they have in the museum. The B52 is enormous, but such thin wings!

I'm wondering if the planes you saw were part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight - a plane was due to fly over our way between 4 or 5pm but we didn't see one, too far out maybe :(

This link shows the route taken:-

We visited RAF Hendon in 2007 and had a very enjoyable day.

Patsylabrador you are so going to have to visit me - Chinooks on the doorstep. I know a really nice layby where you can park and watch the base quite easily. Of course they aren't always doing exercises when you want to watch, but the way those pilots throw those big birdies around has to be seen to be believed. Night time exercises are nice to listen to, kind of relaxing to hear the engine sounds - except the windows rattling when they are a bit low are not so nice!

Love the old planes too, Spitfires are my favourite.

The Vulcan flew really low over my house while the Farnborough Air Show was on. And the Red Arrows. Just love them all really. I get so excited - sadly everyone else is rather blasé and I'm the only idiot jumping up and down waving to them. As if they can see me at those speeds!:lol::lol:

I sat inside a Spitfire at a local steam fair this year. Small dark and cold cockpit. No wonder they had to wear those sheepskin jackets

I got talking to the guy from the RAF that was there with the plane (My dad was in the Free Polish Airforce and flew Spitfires in the RAF during World War Two ) and we swapped loads of old stories. Brought a tear to my eye remembering those.

I went home and dug out an old photo of him in his uniform................sigh

We are ten miles from Hereford. Chinooks fly regularly over the garden. I must ask sometimes if they ever register the two demented children waving to them as they fly over. We always imagine that they are as excited to see us as we are them! I will have to obviously add that we are the ones with the eglu to distinguish ourselves!
