amateurkeeper
I know what you mean tinkerbell, just nearly burst into tears when I realised they were sitting in the pouring rain because they didn't know to go into their house they were soaked through bless them. They're inside now, rain out to put them in and they are hopefully drying off.

Mollie333
Hi blackgold You got your hens in december, right? I'm getting three or four in December and was wondering if they need extra heat, or anything to help them stay warm? Thanks xx
hippy chick
its not the poop its them whe you pick them up ,your hands stink awfull im hoping its somthing that will pass or i cant see them getting handled much as its that bad My lot stank really bad, It wasn't their poo it seemed to be coming from their skin. I washed them all with baby shampoo. They still ponged a bit for a few days but once they started to dustbathe and preen themselves it disapeared. amateurkeeper
Ours smell too, I'm glad you mentioned it - and that it seems to be temporary How are you and your chooks today Tinkerbell? We had our first egg yesterday, was v.funny as she just stood still, the egg fell out and she carried on walking round the pen! Bless her...may take them a while to get used to the nest box! How did your ladies react to the rain (if you've had any)??
jellykelly
|THey do pong a bit when you first get them. I think it's because in the false enviroment that they were in, they were stripped of all their natural behaviuor too. They haven't preened and dustbathed as all of our chooks have. It won't take long. A nice sunny day and a relaxingh dustbath and they will strut around feeling like they look the bee's knee's!
jellykelly
Mollie - I got my 5 girls in january. In terms of heat, I added loads of bedding into the house, popped a couple of hot water bottles under the straw and gave them warm mash porridge before dusk. As scraggly as they were, they all survived and thrived!
Mercedes55
Mine didn't pong when I got them but they had been hosed down by the rescue people as it was a very hot day, so perhaps that took some of the smell away. I have heard countless times about ex batts being very smelly when they first leave the farms and often needing a bath. We've had ours for just over 7wks now and they started to feather up very quickly, but have slowed down the last couple of weeks. Still getting eggs though which is nice
Bexibex
It is so lovely to hear everyone's stories about their ex-batts. I've had mine for 5 weeks now and they also ponged a bit when they first arrived. Now, they dust bathe and preen themselves and don't smell at all (unless they have just walked through some poo!). Their feathers are starting to really grow back and it is so heartwarming to see them thrive and learn to do new things. They are such special animals.
