What a mess the Omlet website is!

Recommended Posts

I know I have said this before, but the Omlet website gets worse and worse. The links are terrible. For instance:

Try this page:

Click on Gallery and you get the Wiki

Click on Wiki and you get Schools

Click on Schools and you get the Newsletter

Click on Library and you stay where you are

Even the links in the shop are bad: you get taken to the checkout for the cube without being able to read about it.

The mistakes I moaned about a year ago are all still present and incorrect. Under Schools on the main page it still says, "If you would like to add a lesson plan to the the our schools area", and under Library the letter T is still missing from "quesionnaire".

Doesn't this kind of thing irritate anyone else? Even if you don't worry too much about typos, the site is impossible to navigate.

I get the right links too.

I would tend to contact the site admin if I found a broken link, which on this site is Kate and James (I hope).

I feel a bit mean sometimes as Kate is a volunteer and the omlet people sometimes are really busy and have other priorities and let things like this slip :?

It's also their site, and up to them how they maintain it.

While we're talking about things with the website:

There are issues with signing up for the newsletter or blog, none of which I was successful with, and I emailed about the blog twice and never got a reply.

It would be nice to see the info on the cube before the checkout.

Ok i'm confused different people get different things.

From the club page the top row of links. It gets it wrong first click but gets it right second click, the cloumn of links works every time.

You can see all about the cube in the products section, nowhere near the checkout bit.

No I'm wrong

once you are in the products section under eglu cube all the links on the left are about the cube.

If you were in the shop you would have to click on products at the top and go to this section to find out about the eglu.

I suppose if you went straight to the shop to look for it, for all products except the eglu there is some information before buying e.g. citricidal, and the eglu goes straight to the basket. :?

The trouble is that there are different things wrong on different pages.

If you go from Page 1 (all links wrong) to page 2 (some links wrong) you will get different results.

All the links are wrong from the main page: but if you don't go back to that page to test the next one, you are testing page 2, not page 1.

It is such a muddle!

Of course, as pointed out, it is up to Omlet how they run their site - but there are problems with it. I don't think it's easy to get to the prices and the guides could be laid out better (sometimes hard to find something you know is in there). Also, a few pages refer to pictures that are no longer there (I have noticed this in the guides, e.g. it will say "see bottom right" and there's nothing there).

I guess the site has just grown over time and changes can be hard to implement. Perhaps there should be a sub-forum for suggestions/complaints.

For me, the issue is that occasionally frusrating website doesn't match the quality of service and attentiveness I received when buying my eglu and chickens. A website gives a first impression of an organisation and its products to many customers, which should match the reality.

Time I waded in here in my big wellies.

First of all, if there are any problems with the FORUM, WIKI and GALLERY (though I hide when I hear that word!!), don't trouble James and the Omlet team with them, I can deal with them so PM or e-mail me and let me know what's wrong and I'll do my best to help. Posting about them on the forum doesn't always catch my eye as I'm not very good at reading everything at the moment.

The Cube pages are new and are bound to have teething problems but I'm sure they will be ironed out soon. I know James and the Omlet team have an incredibly heavy workload at the moment so things may take a while to get corrected.

Regarding the Stickies, Phenna Family, you have a valid point  . There are too many and I'll have a look this afternoon at either demoting some of them to normal posts or I might even create an announcements section where things like get togethers can go to clear the way in the nesting box.

Thanks Kate, sorting the Stickies will make the forum much easier to use & better to look at :D

I have generally always been impressed with the Omlet site in general, but I do admit that it has been a long time since I have had a good trawl through,& I haven't looked at The Cube stuff much.

As has been mentioned,I am sure they are aware of the niggles & will get on top of them when they can.

The typos don't bother me I must say. There are more irritating things in life than a couple of spelling mistakes here & there :lol:8)

I am sorry to give Kate more work. I would love to go through it and put it all right myself, as it is the kind of work I like (I have over two thousand web pages of my own to look after, so I know what it involves).

The main Club page is the one to get right as a priority, as I imagine that most people will start off from there. The links at the top of the page are almost all wrong. Trying to find the Gallery drove me to despair!

I suppose it doesn't really matter all that much. I am a dreadful fusspot and like everything to be perfect.

But don't you more laid-back people get just a tiny bit annoyed when you click on a link and don't get what you were expecting, and can't find it any other way? It spoils a very good site. When I bought my Eglu, I had never seen one before, and it was the website that made me buy it.

I was not criticizing the forum in my message. It is a glorious jumble that could never be put in proper order, and Kate does a wonderful job!

  • Omlet Staff

Hi guys,

Thank you for pointing these things out. The website is my responsibility and at the moment I am finding it is hard to keep on top of things. Often, I can't see the typos, bugs, bad links and general mistakes which inevitably occur. I know that many of these gripes have been around for a while  and do need fixing.

So... I have created a little wiki page here http://wiki.omlet.co.uk/index.php/Website_Bugs to record these mistakes and I will get on top of them as soon as possible.

Thanks for your help,

James

Ooo also. I quickly fixed the links and spelling mistakes that Gallina pointed out...

James

Turn the computer off and go home / forget about work!

Gallina do you get my point?! The bloke is still working at 11pm now fixing typos!!!:lol::lol:

Edited to say that this was posted by Dan on Dan's Desktop and profile where Debs had logged herself in for some reason without telling me...

(Women)..! :roll::lol:

James: That is wonderful! Thank you very much. I have tested the Wiki and it works, and it will keep me very happy. I do want to emphasize how helpful the website was when I was thinking of getting an Eglu. And that the Mark 3 Eglu is the henhouse of my dreams, and I can't wait for mine to arrive.

Dan: I am here at 6.30am working on my websites (I get an hour or two's work in on them before I go to work). I only mentioned my 2000 webpages because I wanted to make it clear I wasn't just a silly old woman who didn't know what I was talking about, but someone who had tens of thousands of links to keep in order myself! They are all voluntary or local history sites: I don't get paid.

I suppose it doesn't really matter all that much. I am a dreadful fusspot and like everything to be perfect.

If you're passionate about something, then it's understandable that you get so frustrated when similar products aren't up to your standard. My OH used to print wallpaper and was a real perfectionist. We can't go ANYWHERE without him commenting on how badly the paper is printed or hung. It's his thing and he can't help himself.

I hope you don't mind me saying that I'm glad you posted the comment above Gallina. It shows your softer, more quirky side, which will always make people smile. Emotions are very difficult to portray on a forum (and the like) and comments can easily be seen as aggressive or sharp when really they are just well meant and are made out of concern.

Glad it's all sorted now. Thank you James and Kate :D

Thanks for your message, Gina. I must admit that when I look back at my messages I am shocked myself at how aggressive some of them sound: they aren't meant to be. I tend to forget to say how good 99.9% is when I zoom in on the 0.1% that irritates me.

I do think the Wiki is a good idea, however, and it will keep me quiet. And I will try to preview all my messages and think: What will this look like to someone else?
