My 8 weeks olds pekin won't eat this morning. Please help !

Recommended Posts

Hi I am a new beginner and need your advice please !! I got 3 x 8 weeks old pekins last weekend - Sooty (black), Mia (Partridge) and Melon (Buff). They all seems settling fine at first, active and buzy finding food; I left water and food with them in the house (cube green) the first 2 nights. Last night I took the feeder and drinker away from the house as I thought they had settled and I should not leave any food in the house at night to attract vermins....this monring, when I took the food and water to them, Sooty (the biggest one in size wise and looks like the highest in pecking order) only briefly ate a little and then just sit in the corner quietly, the other 2 soon following her :( ....... they just cleaning their feathers in the corner.....not as active as the previous days.... I have checked them and there are no running eyes or noses....

(1) are they ok ?

(2) as they are only 8 weeks old should I leave them water and food in the house ALL the time ?

(3) i also saw Melon and Mia every now and then open their beaks (like young birds asking for food) ....is this normal or else ?

Your advices are greatly appreciated. Vivienne

They might just be tired today they will peck at food and water throughout the day. All 16 of my girls have food and water in the day only and eat and drink throughout mine eat a lot more in the afternoon. Don't put it in there at 8 weeks they should be fine to have it throughout the day. Just relax don't worry yourself too much :) I heard the gulping if it is all the time like every couple of seconds then there is something wrong but my girls gulp just to stretch out their necks :)

Hi Chicken Galore, thanks a lot for your reply. That's really calmed me down, a lot ! :| at least when they are gulping i know that they are not choking from eating the wood shavings ! They are still a bit quieter than the previous days and I will keep an eye on them and update the progress. :)

I also have three 8/9 week old pekins that I got just over a week ago. I noticed that on about the third day they seemed alot less busy and would spend time in a little group sitting down. I guess it is just the interest of new surrounding and then normal relaxing and settling into their new home. I have also noticed that one of mine (the biggest) opens her beak as though yawning but it isn't very often.

Hi, I also have three 8 week old pekins, they love spinach which I put in a fat block feeder and hang up so they can peck at it, this really does get them eating and is entertaining to watch while they work out how to get at the green stuff. I have also found that they vary the amount they eat from day to day. I dont put any food or water in the house with them at night and they run like kids coming out of school, down the ramp when I open the door on a morning :lol::lol: I am sure they will be fine. enjoy them, they are soooooo sweet at this age.

Hi thanks njoy and frizz for the replies :) you are right, they may be just more relax now than the previous day..... this afternoon they started eating again :D I let them out to the run (the first time) and they kept chasing and fighting for the little worms they found

I will get them some treat (spinach or brocoli) and hang it up for them to play with......

Thanks ...
