What do you use to feed the 'extras' in ?

Recommended Posts

Hi eveyone,

I have an eglu with the feeds for the pellets etc, but wondering what you use to put the extras in like veggies, s"Ooops, word censored!"s etc. I tried using a spare hay ball had from my rabbits pen, but most of it fell out before it got in the run :lol: .

I have also thought of some kind of tray to put on floor ? but curious to know what you use ?

Thanks xx

Have tried both now... throwing some in to distract them from trying to get out the door  A little tray but that gets pecked about and find it hard to get it back our the run. :? I have seen those spiral bird feeders in Pets at Home so think might try on of those next.

I am trying to settle into a routine with them, but early days yet. :D

The reason I use a bowl is I read somewhere it is useful as then they recognise their bowl, so if you need to get them back in the run you can show them the bowl. This is all theory - I've never done that. But they do totally recognise their bowl, they get uber excited at the mere sight of it!

I use a blue scoop for their treat which is scattered liberally in their enclosure. They recognise the scoop - before now if they are FR and I have the empty blue scoop, they instantly come half running and wings flapping to me. Needless to say, I can't not give them any treat. :D

I have two green plastic pet food dishes (so there's always a spare) and I use them to round up the girls to get them back in their run. They all recognize what it means (treats!) and do a flap-assisted run up the garden towards me, and then I have a chicken obstacle course to get back to the run.

I feel bad confessing that I bought a china bowl from Marks and sparks especially for their treats! It was from a hand painted 'chicken design' range they did (and seem to repeat at Christmans and again last Easter). It's bright colours and the girls really recognise it and come running and as it is distinctive it doesn't get mixed up with our own china. They also have a bird feeder hanging inside their run which we use for things like corn cobs.

You know, I'm not convinced about this recognising the treat bowl theory. My girls go potty whenever I take the tub of peelings out to the compost bin and I'm pretty sure I've never fed them those!!:lol::lol:

I am beginning to think they just got potty for food all the time. Never realised chickens were such good eaters.:lol:

Ooooh, mine definitely know their bowls, they follow me even when they've just seen me take it (empty) out of their run in order to go and refill it. :)

These bowls are bright green if anyone's interested.
