MammaT
Hello all, I'm a very new chicken owner (last Saturday they arrived) and decided I needed to upgrade the very temporary housing the girls were in so have just bid on, and won, a classic on ebay. I'm just seeking some reassurance that it will be worth the money!!! It was expensive but came with 2 run extensions and I figured if we decide to go the WIR way there will still be a decent amount of sale value in the pieces we do't want. Just thought I'd ask for some positive comments before I consider telly hubby exactly how much I've spent... Thank you in advance. Dizzy-Deb
Hi Teresa Welcome to chicken keeping. I have only had my elgu just over a week, and like you it came as used from ebay sale. I dont regret it at all and thinks its brilliant. I had planned to go for a cube and then a WIR first, but as an eglu came up for sale on my doorstep I couldnt resist.... thinking along the lines of... start smaller and then work up. Cut my teeth so to speak with the eglu and all the newness of keeping chickens with that first. I am still going to get a cube and planning a WIR but there is no rush for that and am quite happy with the eglu for the time being. Another of the reasons had the eglu was that I knew once had my cube and WIR done I could sell the eglu again, and probably get a my money back for it, especially as they are now due to go up in price. Eglus do seem to hold their price in second hand sale values. I know can seem expensive but as said if/when you decide to sell... you will get a fair price back for it compared to say a wooden coop. All best xx
MammaT
Thanks for that Dizzy-Deb I know it's just jitters as I've read loads on this site over the last week and can see the sense in starting with an Eglu. I didn't want to spend a slightly smaller amount on a wooden ark and then maybe face red mites in summer and lose a lot on re-sale value. I just want the best for my 2 girls (non-layers as yet) and I have stretched my budget to the max. I think I've also realised over the last few days just how hooked I am on chickens even in such a short while and I know this is the best place to get some advice, and understanding, as a fair few of my friend think I'm nuts already! I'm sure it will all work out fine especially when the eggs start. Onwards and upwards...
Mercedes55
It's fine to start with an Eglu, I started with one back in June and have recently bought a Cube. However I have kept the Eglu as it's good to use for any introductions and as you say they do hold their price and as they are plastic they won't rot away like a wooden coop. Hope you enjoy your Eglu as much as I do
Purplemaniacs
I love my Elgu Classic, it is over 2 and a half years old now and other than the roosting bars which are the old wooden ones shows no other signs of wear. I think it is beautifully designed, so clever. I also have a cube which is attached to a WIR, the run is great and the cube is ok but not as good as the . Egluntyne
A smashing piece of kit. You won't regret having bought it.
Olly
I think we've all done this (except perhaps me, as my first Eglu was a gift!) - pressed 'Buy' and then thought 'eek - what have I done'! You will not regret it - and if you do, well you can always resell it on eBay! (You won't, though).
Ain't Nobody Here
Still love my eglu, 3 years down the line . You won't regret it .
Daphne
I've got 2 eglus and a wooden house and this week I've started using a cube as well. I can't tell you how excited I am with it - its bigger than my wooden house, easier to clean and ferret out any nasties, and keep dry (thats not a criticism of wood, just my house). I've been doing this chicken keeping lark for a while but I feel so much more reassured with plastic. I feel that the kit is expensive, but in the long run it does what it says on the tin and I don't spend my time bodging a solution. I am a complete fan
Stedic
I moved from wood to an Eglu in May. Its without a doubt the best thing I could possibly have done. Its so easy to clean, move about if needed. More importantly, the girls have loved it from day one.

Janty
I started with a cube and then bought an eglu within a week. I have recently adopted four girls who came with their own wooden house and run and we hate the wood so much that hubby has bought me a cube for Christmas. You'll love the eglu.
