cheeky girls
I am a mum-to-be of four new ladies (Gingernut Rangers) a cube, and standard 2m run - all due to be delivered on Monday 13th - 5 days and counting. My predicament is, should I order an extention (ie 3m run) so that they have more room. They will not be able to free range all day so I am thinking that they may need more room. Also bearing in mind that this could turn into an addiction and more girlies may come along at some time in the future. I think I know the answer, but would appreciate thoughts on this. Bexibex
Hi If you have the money I would suggest the extension, especially if you think you may get more in the future. I have the extended run and I am so pleased I went for it.
karena
I have 3 in a classic with a run extension to 3m. I think it is meant to be 1m per chook, although that is for the classic. Pretty sure they are the same width though, so same principle would apply I guess. I think 4 in 2m would be really tight.
jess1merlin
If they are not able to come out during the day then the run extension would be a good idea. I have 4 in a standard run but they do come out for a few hours each day and they seem fine. I would still prefer to have an extension but unfortunately I can't fit it in. Plum
I ordered my run within a couple of days of getting the cube so yes order it now
chickencam
I would go for the extension, especially if they aren't going to get out much. We had 4 in an Eglu run with extension, I think that they need the extra space or they get bored. It is worth hanging things in their for them to peck at too, like bunches of cabbage leaves and sweetcorn, these all make it less likely that they will start pecking each other. My 2 old ladies now have acres of space in the run with extension. We ordered ours pretty soon after getting our initial order, so I would add it now too. ClaireG
Seeing your enthusiasm on Tuesday, then i'd defiantly get an extension now
cheeky girls
Thank you all very much for advice. Well, I have gone and done it and spent even more money on the little ladies (and they haven't even arrived yet) All it took was a phone call - if only getting an extension for your own house was as easy. So - roll on Monday..
chicken bark
Hope it all goes well on Monday and good move getting the extension. It is always best to give chickens as much space as you can. Happier hens make yummier eggs.
MarkBevBen
Aww wishing you the best of luck for Monday, bet you can't wait! We've had our three Omlet girls for a week and a day now and they're such good fun and have settled into their new environment really well. They even laid an egg on their very first day!! goodinparts
Just added an extension to our as with the kids returning to uni soon there will be days when my three girls don't get out into the playground. The extra space means that I've been able to pop in a couple of logs/tree stumps which they seem really thrilled with. Broody Brigid, who is definitely NOT top chicken in most respects, seems specially keen on playing "King of the Castle"... Having the extra space in the run just makes me feel like a better chicken mum when I have to be out vicaring and my girlies can't go out to play. Now to work out some in-run amusements for them. No, of COURSE I don't have anything better to do with my time than entertain my chickens! What an idea...
Gaffer
I got my cube with 1 extension nearly 3 weeks ago. 2 days after it arrived I added 2 more extensions this is much better for my 6 girls. I of my girls has stopped eating 1 1/2 days ago when i let her out to day if she is no better i will have to take her to the Vet
