Janepie33
Does anyone know to to find and kill e-mail viruses that seem to have slipped through all the security controls (namely Norton anti virus). DD - just started her first week at uni - sent an e-mail titled "I am so unhappy". Obviously I was very worried, but when I read on, it seemed that it was not actually from her as it then went on to say that she was driving a BMW, which was quite surprising as she has not passed her test yet! Other people have also had e-mails purporting to be from DD. I have suggested she downloads and uses the free versions of C Cleaner and AVG but have no idea whether they conflict with Norton. Any thoughts on the matter gratefully received.
abwsco
She'll have to uninstall Norton which isn't the easiest of things to do without installing something. AVG is a bit of a hog now. I use Avast which is free.
Redwing
Is she sure its a virus? could someone have got hold of her sign in details?
Janepie33
I'm not sure what it is really.I suppose that is possible. The messages are all different and her computer is sending about 60 e mails a day and also sending her messages to tell her that some of the messages are undeliverable. Just not sure how she can stop it. She said that the computer itself is OK, it's just the e mails that are the problem. Difficult for us to help when she is away at uni, but on the plus side, there must be several computer literate people near her that should be able to help - she just has to get to know them! debbier
It's possible that the emails aren't originating from her pc, but that someone is "spoofing" the sent-by (and/or reply-to) fields. I wouldn't personally recommend Norton: Microsoft's Security Essentials (free) is pretty good. You can download it while Norton is switched on, then uninstall Norton and install MSE. Don't use a browser while installing MSE.
bluekarin
get her to download Malware bytes. Its free and picks up things that AVG doesn't. http://www.malwarebytes.org/ Hopefully this will help
Angie
Hi, Your DD has had her email account hacked and they are using it for spoof mail. She needs to inform her email account about this so they can trace it. The best way for her to stop this is to go into her contact list and put a tild ~ before all her addresses so they can not be used so an email will look like this adl@hotmail.co.uk is now ~adl@hotmail.co.uk When her provider has this traced then they should block the invading user and she can remove the tild. Unfortunately till then she will have to type her email address in instead of an automatic tag. Angela.
Geoid
The only way to truly eradicate any virus is to format the whole computer and reinstall from fresh, I hope she has backed up.

My daughter got a re-direct virusm whcih meant when she used the search engine it redirected her to porn, all the time...not good
