quickcluck
Just wondering as DH and I have taken it up as a new hobby, and he was recently given a birthday prezzie of stuff to make our own cache including a travel bug! He was very happy. We are thinking of hiding our own cache, has anyone done this? How did you choose your spot? Do you have to mantain it much???? Any advice? Thanks

quickcluck
lol It's sort of like a grown up treasure hunt! You have a little GPS thingy, and people hide the treasure and publish the co-ordinates. You then go and find the treasure!!!! It's usually a little plastic pot with alsorts of things in there left by people who've found it, you leave your own piece of treasure and take one that's been left and sign the log which says that you've found it! We just did our first international one whilst on our hols in Lanzarote! www.geocaching.com have a look. I am sure someone will explain it bette than me! sari
We love geocaching...but had the loan of a GPS, and it had to go back, so can't do much atm. The websire posted up there, has all the info...I think you have to do the occasional checks, and keep an eye on the logs, to monitor any unusual entries, or flags. Good luck, and have fun....we love it!!
Bassett
We started geocaching earlier this year and it's a fun hobby the whole family can enjoy together. I really enjoy visiting new places that I wouldn't have gone to otherwise. It's amazing how many local places I've discovered through geocaching. At the start of the summer holidays we hid 5 caches, a series of three caches in a local park and two more in another park nearby. We chose the locations as they are lovely parks that I thought people would enjoy visiting, and there hadn't been any caches placed there previously. We researched the hide locations in the parks by walking around several times to find the best site to place the caches. So far we haven't had to do any maintenance, I've checked on a couple of them in passing. You get sent emails everytime someone finds the cache, and they will let you know if any maintenance is required, it's nice to read their comments. There are some rules to be followed, you have to live within a reasonable distance of the cache site and it can't be placed near a school or playground. Good Luck and I'd be interested to know how you get on.
quickcluck
Thanks for that, there is a woods near by which could be a good site, the only thing that puts us off is in the summer we did some caches in wooded areas and the canopy of trees really interferred with the GPS signal!
