The dog basket normally lives under my cube which shelters it from the rain

I agree this has tuned out to be a lovely thread with some great photos and ideas, i would still like a belfast sink for my girls though as i think the plastic tub i am using has a limited life (and the girls are yet to use it still lol).

What a lovely thread and great pictures. You inspired me to get a tub, so I got a nice pink tub from Asda and filled it with children's play sand and a bit of conifer where the girls used to like scratching around.

 

Elsie has really taken to it and yesterday I saw her in the tub, with Dottie and Hilda both poking their heads in!!

I put a large seed tray in the run and filled it with sand - they methodically topped it up with the aubiose bedding that I have sprinkled everywhere. As yet, I haven't seen any of my girls actually using it for what it should be used for . I feel a bit cheated really and was lookingforward to the giggles and photo opportunities..

I have a large seed tray also filled with sand. it's only occupant so far has been one of the rabbits, who is thoroughly enjoying pretending to dig to Australia!!!

I have a washtub (59p) filled with dry soil and a shallow seeding tray (although this tends to get turned over).

I have filled an 'under the bed' storage container with dry compost / soil. Can't comment on whether they like it yet though as they're still in their eglu run 'homing' until the weekend!

I would be interested to hear what works, especially over the winter! Last year I tried putting out a box filled with sand, even placed under the cover it managed to get wet and then turned over, the girls never even considered using it! So far this year I have managed to keep an area dry in the run and I dig it over once or twice a week, not sure how I will be able to do that when the ground freezes over! How often do they need to dust bath, does anyone know?

I use an old tin bath with sawdust/sand/soil/diatomous earth combo. They love it and are always in it when confined to the run - but naturally prefer the personalised chicken body shaped holes in the lawn and borders.

Reading through these posts I'm certainly going to get a tub trug this weekend. They look so jolly. It seems as if bark is a good thing to put in. What about wood ash? Will that make them incredibly dirty or can they easily shake it off? With these cold evenings I'm getting quite a bit of it.
