Cinnamon
Has anyone planted their Courgettes out yet? I have 3 ready to go, but am not sure if its a bit early for them yet
fluffymuppet
Hi Cinnamon, It depends entirely on the weather - courgettes will die if there's a frost and they're not protected. You can check when the last frost should be in your area on this website: http://www.gardenaction.co.uk/main/weather1.asp. After that date is past you should be OK to put tender plants outside, but it's still wise to keep an eye on the weather forecast in case there's a late frost - in which case you'd need to rush out and cover the plant up or bring it inside if it's still in a pot. Christian
Fab site thanks Fluffy! Early May for me! Now just need to finish off the beds! I'm growing Courgette 'di Nizza' again this year. Really heavy fruiting, tennis ball size fruits!
Minky
Think mine will be going in in the next couple of week, just gotta watch out for that end of May last frost. Grew from seed for the first time this year, and as I assumed I would kill everything I planted quite alot and I'm now rather inundated - tho thankfully a friend has just been granted an alotment so I know where I can offload 'em Had six plants in the garden last year and boy was I sick of courgette by the end of summer
Martin B
I have 6, 7 or 8 plants (can't remember) ready to plant in!
AnnieP
I put mine in yesterday (1 of Christians and 3 of my own). I have put them under cloches (erm, really upmarket cut down 2 litre lemonade bottles)
SarahJo
Like your style Annie ... I planeted mine out a couple of days ago .. but have fleece ready if required. Am a bit though as the snails have learned how to destroy three of my beans ... they were a perfect height against a drain pipe, at the back of the garage ... so they crawled along and ate, avoiding any anti-snail/slug device at ground level. I will never under-estimate a snail again .
Lesley
Slugs and snails have an amazing ability to find ways round all the deterrents I have 4 types of courgette just starting to show in pots and also 3 types of pumpkin - they are going to be planted in an old muck heap which we discovered. One of the pumpkins is called Hundredweight - so I'm hoping they will grow really well in there. They won't be ready to go out until May. Christian
Lesley, the Hundredweight was one of the pumpkins GW tried! They are massive, if you only leave 1 fruit per plant! I have 'Jack be little' growing on my window sill - bless
Lesley
I'm growing both of those Christian - I love the tiny ones cooked whole.
Chickpea
I have 'Jack be little' growing on my window sill - bless I was tempted with that but opted for 'Small sugar' instead, let us know how they turn out! I'm also growing some yellow courgettes for a change this year 'Gold rush' yum. (no doubt I'll be sick of 'em by the end of summer )
Cinnamon
Are these mini courgettes you are talking about? I haven't come across any of those, but they sound really interesting & I would love to know more, please I have a couple of normal ones (don't know the name) & I picked up a yellow one called taxi yesterday at the Farmers market
Lesley
Jack be Little is a small pumpkin Sarah - I assume Sugar Rush is as well. JBL is cricket ball size and can be eaten whole if picked just a bit smaller than that, when they have a lovely sweet flavour. At full, cricket ball, size I cut in half, add a stuffing of some sort, and then roast.
