I love reading what everyone calls their chickens, there are some fantastic names on here! - someone has Queen-themed names which I love, and the old-fashioned names seem popular too. so I wondered how and why you chose your girls' names. these are some of our examples.

 

our first lot were a footballers' wives/It Girl combo: Paris, Tara, Mercedes and Chardonnay. (Chardonnay is the sole survivor).

 

the next lot were food-themed: Apricot, Muffin, Meringue (a Marans), Crunchy, Sugar (Apricot turned out to be a 'he' and has gone to a new home, is a daddy several times over, and re-christened Elvis)

 

then we kind of lost the plot and things got rather vaguer: Ditto (buff orp, she's huge!); Rhoda (RIR - obviously)

 

and the latest ones: Fairy (named by youngest); Spot (speckledy); Ginger (RIR); Elaine (named after friend); Shirley (big girl, as in Burley Chassis); Muffin the second; Snowy.

 

the quail dont really have individual names, they are John and Pauline Prescott plus 4, and George and Mildred plus 4.

Mine all have old lady type names, because they remind me of the gossipy stereotype played by Les Dawson! My next two will be Dolly and Tallulah (a bit posh, that one). Someone on here has a chicken called Mrs.Pants, which might be my favourite chicken name ever

hey madchickenlady, my oldest daughter is called Tallulah!! it's a fabulous name, and just as good for a chicken as for a 14 year old girl!!

mine get named according to what they're like (helps me tell them apart at first!)

 

Atilla the Hen because she was a bit tough

Bertha because she was big

Peeper because she made a peeping noise instead of clucking

Boadicea because she beat Atila (okay not strictly historically accurate...) and because she looks after her girls

Trumpet because she sounds like one

Scrawny because she is.

 

I love chicken names that are Mrs something though! might have to call the next one Mrs Something. so far none of them are dignified enough for a Mrs title!

ours get named depending on who's turn it is.

the wife chose pebbles, ginger, betty. I chose fauna, Flora (Biology theme), Betelgeuse, Orion, Bellatrix (stars and constilations theme).

 

next i am thinking of chemistry theme buthopefully that will be a way off yet, and its the wifes go next anyway !

I will call my Bantam Wyandotte girls Cinnamon and Sugar . Don't know why I chose these names, guest it is just because they are cute. My friends say that hens can't be called Cinnamon and Sugar, because they are dog and cat names. Other laughed when I told them that my hens would have names at all.

We got three chickens and we are a family of three, so we each got to choose a name.

 

I chose Cleopatra because she has a large comb which made me think of an egyptian headdress.

My husband chose Henrietta just because he liked it, even though it's a bit of a common name for a chicken.

My son - well, his proposed choices caused a bit of a row! He thought about Finger Lickin, or Sunday, or Bird, but ended up with Lucky (thank goodness!)

We've had our 5 since august and they still don't have names, I don't think we will bother now, they are so alike in colour, I would have to put leg rings on to tell them apart!

We started out with old lady names - Margo, Lottie , Hattie, Elsie, then the boys broke the pattern by naming bluebelle and pepper. I was lazy with my next lot and ran out of old lady names after Mabel ,Nora and Doris,the others ended up being called by the shortened breed names - favvie, Ozzy, Welly, except for Muppet who looked like a Muppet The chicks got stuck with names beginning with D, why, I don't know, Delilah, Dilbert and Dandelion. And poor Lola had the first name that came into my head.

We've got a Harry Potter theme! Our girls are Hermione (yes, she is clever and bossy), Ginny (yes, she's the slightly reckless one) and Luna (yes, she's completely batty)............. and she's mine!!

 

We love them all to bits.

when we got our 3 ex-bats i knew i wanted to name one 'Lulubelle', just because i thought it was such a sweet name - it turns out the girl we named 'Lulubelle' is the Dennis the Menace of hens! so the neighbours have to listen to me shouting 'Lulu, get down from there!' - 'Lulu, leave that tomato plant alone!' - 'Lulu, please get out of the poo sack!' - 'Lulu, don't you dare kick over that bowl!' - 'oh Lulu - look what you've done now...' all week long

 

our other ex-bat got the name 'Boo' because she was so poorly when we bought her home that she needed lots of tlc, and being the one to give it her i just fell in love with her little self, hence she became 'my Boo' (a term of endearment & affection).

 

our third & final ex-bat was chosen by hubby (who until he saw her had absolutely no interest in keeping chickens - it was all 'my thing'), and he named her Doris because apparently when he was growing up if there was a girl you were dating she'd be known amongst your friends as 'your Doris' - to this day she still is and always will be 'his Doris', and i think when her time comes to go to chooky heaven i will have to rush out & replace her with a look-a-like before he notices! no, seriously...

 

our recently rescued chick - who apparently hatched from a white silkie egg , but is a black silkie x poland x araucana type breed - has been christened Kinuko because it means 'child of silk' although we call her 'Nuko' for short.

 

i already have names chosen for the 2 chickens we are re-homing from a farm in nottingham who rescues chickens from the meat trade, inc. broiler chickens .

i'm going to call them 'bam bam & pebbles'

and i also love the names 'sookie & bill' (from true blood ) for if we ever get a cock & hen pair (although at the moment having Lulu is just about enough to put the neighbours through!)

Every time someone asks my husband "do the hens have names", he sheepishly tells them and then makes sure to point out that it was his wife who did the naming!

Our first pair were Minnie & Moose - Minnie because my son, then 7, thought she looked like a 'Minnie'; Moose because it suited her and worked with Minnie! And since then we've just carried on with the 'M' theme - still have loads of ideas for future names but we wait til we've seen a chicken in action before we decide what her name should be. Possible future hens though include Maud, Madge, Magda, Molly & Maureen

My first three were named by my OH and his grandson...........Never again. They are MY chickens!!! GS called his Sabre.OH said ,"What! you're going to give them names?" (he's a country boy). So he called one Kylie (after his dream girl and the other Dottie after his mum (Dorothy)

I called them the Three Musketeers

The newest three, 2 hens and a cockerel I named. Jumping Jack Flash coz he's lean and flashy and reminds me of Mick Jagger, his vorwerk wife is Gerry (See the play between Mick's wife's name and well........a German breed of chicken.

His other hen is Bianca, wife number one.

I got my first girls the day after I bought tickets for the Spice Girls reunion concert so that's why I had Sporty, Scary, etc. The bossiest chicken was named after the head of our school council...Lauren. Then we named the little pekin Popcorn as in popcorn chicken.

 

We have had chef inspired names...Delia, Fanny, Nigella, etc.

 

We have had LFC inspired names...Gerrard, Torres, Paisley, Shankly, etc.

 

Herbs, Teletubbies, chocolate, etc.

 

Trouble is that we have run out of ideas at the moment.

I have three unnamed hens and can't think what to call them.

My daughters named their own hens, Maya chose the exchequer leghorn ( that I had chosen for myself hmmph !) and as she adores Florence, from Florence and The Machine...and she has a big floppy red comb... she's Florence. Marnie has a Cream Legbar, who was little and bald, and very gawky, so she thus name Gertrude. I ended up with a pair of Sussexs...miserable as sin, and stand offish, so Pattie and Selma, Marge Simpson's grumpy sisters. Sadly Selma is no longer with us......I am tempted to adopt another Legbar, who got out of her pen, into one with the HUGE Orpingtons, and has been pecked half to death....but I'm away next week...so if she's still going next week after.....I may set up a hospital ark.....

Someone on here has a chicken called Mrs.Pants, which might be my favourite chicken name ever

That was me I had a bit of an issue with some very noisy girls a few months ago and Mrs Pants was one of the culprits so she has gone to live on a smallholding near Bath with some of her noisy sisters. OH named her

 

Alot of our girls have got their names from songs and I'm silly enough to sing their song to them as I cuddle them Hey There Delilah by the Plain White T's is a particularly favourite song of mine so one of my daughters named her newest chicken Delilah. Delilah really enjoys her song

Our dog's name is Toffee....( she was originally named Buffy, and the Dog Psych advised us to change it) ....so of course she gets called Toffee Fiffles, and Fifi trousers..... My family are weird.

When I got my ex bats (via taras - still thanking you for looking after them!) I found I had 7 instead of the 4 to 6 I was expecting. I looked at my collection of leg rings and found I had the correct number and colours for a rainbow. The hens became collectively know as the Rainbow Girls, and I started thinking of names to do with colours. During this I spotted that jewels are coloured - idea!

 

Now we have Ruby, Amber, (Topaz RIP,) Peridot (I didn't want Jade), Sapphire, Tanzanite (you may have to Google that one) and Amethyst. We are getting some new hens next weekend who will be Onyx (a 'Sussex reverse' in black), Pearl (a Sussex - white) and maybe Agate, or something else which is brown - maybe Coral.

Sorry, should have said...Toffee was a Rescued dog, and the advice from the Rescue's Dog Psych is that, especially if the dog has been abused or very ill-treated, is to change the name, so it disassociates that name and past with its current situation. How true this is, I don't know! I did know that I couldn't stand in the park shouting Buffy! She responds to a swift yell of " OI! " the best anyway I have often wondered what qualifications one needs to be a dog psych..and if chooks ever need one hahaha

Well..

 

I started off with 3 Pekins, and two Silkie x Pekins.

The Silkie x Pekins had very hairdo's, and of course it was just after X Factor ! So we called them.. Jon and Edward!

 

The Pekins we're named by my Mum, Deirdre, Blanche, and Ethel (got nicknamed Effy..From 'Skins' )

 

Then i got the two Warrens, Betty and Rita, named after old women, again.

 

I collected 'Cheryl' the turkey and didn't have a clue what to call her. After a few hours some one suggested 'Cheryl Cole' And well, there it is. She got nicknamed 'Chezza' or 'Cher' by the kids.

 

The Silkies were named Peggy and Pat, from Eastenders, because sometimes they were really close, the next they would be pecking eachother.

 

When i got my Lemon cuckoo Pekin and Partridge Frizzle, i named them Fizz and Pop! Fizz for the frizzle (Obviously ) and Pop(py) for the smooth!

 

I got a call of one of my friends, they had a random chicken in there back garden, so got him and took him home. The kids that come and help me with the hens decided to call him 'Lucky', i wasn't going to name him, because didn't know if he'd stay. He had to put on alot of weight.. Lucky is still with us, luckily

 

Now i've got 2 Frizzle Polish pullets- Riah (rie-ah) and Maya(may-ah), just because i like those names!
