jester
Does anyone know if omlet hens have been vaccinated against mycoplasma? I got my hens and eglu 9 days ago from omlet and am loving the whole experience and the hens but have some concerns. i have a gingernut ranger and miss pepperpot. They started sneezing the afternoon after taking delivery. The pepperpot has had clear mucus/some bubbles but now that has gone and her beak is dry. She has never acted unwell, has ate and drank normally and loves free ranging for a few hours every day, actively eating insects. Ive put citricidal in their water for the last 6 days. I'm just still concerned about the sneezing or could now been coughing- im not sure which. the other hen only sneezes a few times a day. I'd love to rule out mycoplasma as it is on my mind although with a dry beak all day today I'm feeling a bit more hopeful.
Steve the Gas
Some of mine had this a while back and it is very contagious. Tylan was administered in the water for about 3-4 days - all gone.
jester
Thanks for that. Did your hens act unwell in anyway or were they behaving normally?

jester
Jester, yes otherwise they acted as chooks - they got fed up of acting like other things but were they eating normally, looking perky, not lethargic etc? Also have they continued to lay eggs?
jester
**Some info here** thanks. would i have been told if the batch mine came from had had colds and antibiotics prior to them being despatched? Im strongly considering getting replacement hens from omlet as ive only just received them. I live in the north west. Do you think the long journey might affect their health again if it was that or have you heard of other people in the north west receiving hens which are healthy? Steve the Gas
When mine had a chest infection, yes, they were eating/drinking/behaving normally.
Chucky Mama
It is not uncommon for hens (or any animal for that matter) to succumb to minor illness when stressed by a change in circumstances. Your hens may well need a short course of antibiotics to settle this down. You could have the same issue which fresh stock.

Both hens haven't sneezed at all today so i wonder now if it was just a cold and the citricidal has cleared it up. I'll see what they are like tomorrow. Chucky Mama
Forgot to mention - just rule out that the bedding that you are using isn't making them sneezy
jester
Forgot to mention - just rule out that the bedding that you are using isn't making them sneezy Yes thanks for that. Did have dust extracted straw, switched to paper on Thursday when i cleaned them out, who knows this may have helped asd still no sneezing up until bedtime. Really hope there i s none tomorrow and will feel we are over it then. Theres been a distinct difference in where they have free ranged today, all over the garden as opposed to mainly under bushes, i think they are feeling more settled. gongladosh
It's good to hear that things are getting better with your hens - we had similar with some new hens on bark chippings. I've had a couple of iffy looking bags of bark chippings (ie spores on the chippings) from a certain large DIY chain - am thinking of switching to Aubiose...
