Cranfield Kate
okay this morning i went out and opened the pop hole, put out the food, and when they had all vacated the sleeping quarters (not an eglu but an old cupboard with vents), shut the pop hole so I could poo-pick without them coming in and getting in the way. I then stumbled back to the house and... forgot to open the pop hole again. i went off and did my chores and when i came back a couple of hours later i went to say hello and realised it was closed, as soon as i opened it one of them went dashing in wailing and practically with her legs crossed and one poor soul had laid one in the run out in the cold with no lovely straw to sit on... i feel rotten. they rely on me to be the brains of the operation and I failed...I am a terrible chicken owner. debsygooch
Yes you are - you are a very naughty Chicken Mum I left my poor girls without food the other day!! I had let them out to FR so popped into the WIR to get their grub out to fill with food, put it on the bench to fill with food got totally distracted only to come out a couple of hours later to spot one empty grub still on the bench - luckily the girls were so engrossed in wrecking the garden I don't think they noticed - they got extra "guilt" treats that evening
chicken bark
You are not the first. It is so easy for something to slip your mind. I forgot to switch the electric fence on last night. Thankfully I had remembered to lock them all in their houses so they were safe but I am cross with myself just the same. I can imagine the relief your chicken felt when she finally got to the nesting box.
goodinparts
Kate - you have real competition for the title of "worst ever". Me The other afternoon I let mine out to FR and because Broody Brigid was living up the name, shut the door to the ...The evening drew in, I fed the dog & cat, dealt with some phonecalls then realised - eeek - it was dark & my chooks were out & unable to put themselves to bed. Rushed down to their playground, trying to imagine where they would choose to roost if they couldn't get in to their bedroom - only to find all 3 of them stacked up against the door, complaining softly, like a group of old ladies when the bus is late. They were VERY sleepy, so getting them to wake up enough to allow me to open the door was a bit of a challenge - but they wobbled their way in groggily and shut them up for the night, so thankful that nothing awful had happened to them while I was failing to focus. MarkBevBen
Oh no Kate, you're certainly not the only one hun! I've on occasion forgotten to close the Eglu door - the girls seemed to be right as reign, but you don't half feel the guilt don't you! Snowy
Yes I think we have all done it at some point. Last week I let my old ones out to freerange and so the youngsters could have some time to them selves in the WIR I shut the door. It was just going dark when I remembered the oldies would need letting back in - bless them, they were all roosting on the fence barrier that runs around their free range area! All huddled as near to the cube as possible
daxigirl
I forgot to push the roof back on the cube after cleaning up the other morning and it was a couple of hours later before I saw it. Paxo had been put off by having a sky light and shot in once I closed it to lay her egg.
