Silkies and new waterproof run with photos

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone

Just spent a lovely hour lying upside down in the Go run threading cable ties through to waterproof the run. The grass was getting so wet it was getting impossible to move them around often enough so following all your brilliant advice we have edged the run with plastic lawn edging and then fixed clear sheeting over the run leaving both doors with flaps that I can keep up for ventilation. Have used sanitizer on the ground and Easibed in the run. Hadn't bargained on them scratching around so much that food and water got filled with bedding in ten minutes!! Have put the Omlet feeder back in to try but they didn't seem to like it in the beginning. Also raised the green gravity water feeder on bricks - but any ideas would be appreciated. They do FR most of the day.

Have only had Henrietta since April - sadly her two companions turned out to be a Jo (not Flo) and Boris (not Doris) as they started crowing instead of laying. Hence the other four girls have been with us since September, the gold girls have started laying but the red and grey are a little bit younger, just hoping they are girls too!

As lots of you seem to leave the Eglu door open at night I might try that as well as it gets so light early in the morning they can get to their food and water without me getting up at the crack of dawn! Will try this until it gets really cold.

Hope the pictures add ok, I am very proud of my girls!! Have a good weekend.

That's great and your girls are lovely. :D

I wouldn't leave the door open though. A friend was woken by a fox at 5am jumping on the run and had shredded the plastic. Luckily she ran out and chased it off but it could have been a different story, they can get their foot through the wire :( Up to you though, lots do.

Thanks for that, I decided to shut the door tonight because of the fireworks so will stick to that routine, I was just worried about them being shut in for longer as it gets dark so early and then I don't let them out until 7.30 - so I was worried they would be really hungry and thirsty in the morning as they take themselves off to bed so early. I do put them back in the run from FR around 4 pm before it gets dark and they then have some porridge.
