welovemarmite
Where can i get one??? I need one of those big ones that means people with a lousy aim can still catch chickens when they escape...
SJChick
The lady where I collected my chickens caught them using a fishing net - so perhaps a fishing tackle shop nearby?

welovemarmite
so do i! We have a short fence at the back of the garden and none have escaped in the time we have had them, over a year. Now two have escaped in the last couple of weeks.... Think we need to do some chicken proofing and get the net in place.
JS1
Resurrecting this thread as I found it through Google I've just added to my little flock with a couple of hybrids and a white leghorn (Morehens struck and there's no date for BHWT in Scotland at the moment ) My chickens free-range within an electric fenced area of the garden and live in a Cube. At the moment the three new girls are in the Eglu run with extension, but I'll be trying a supervised free-range shortly. Thing is, I'm alarmed about the potential flightiness of the leghorn - although her wing has been thoroughly clipped - especially initially when my bolshie older girls go for her. If she does fly over the fence, then I'd like to be confident of getting her back. I've been 'training' them with the sound of rattling corn and she seems quite food orientated at the moment, which is good, as I might be able to get her back that way. But she's not crouching yet, so I thought a net might be the way to go. What I was wondering was the type of net people use - and how long a handle is best? I saw the Flyte so Fancy one but it's pretty expensive and I couldn't find the Amazon one mentioned above (not surprising as the thread's a year old). Also, any reassurance that it'll probably all be okay would be very welcome too. (for info I have two araucanas, two creme legbars, a maran, a welsumer and two hybrids in addition to the new girls - only one that's ever flown the fence is one of the hybrids - although the smaller araucana flung herself through the mesh once )
Sam
I'd just use a landing net. All my girls are trained to the shake of mealworm tub, so I've never needed to use my net I would imagine you could get them really cheap, if you are just using it for chickens then they wouldn't need to be that strong. A lot of landing nets have telescopic poles anyway so they extend quite long, but of course it depends how close she lets you get to her
Angie
Net what net just turn up with food and they fight to follow you back into the run, I do actually have a pond fish net a blue one from the garden centre, does the job nicely. The Dogmother
I use a landing net from the local fishing tackle shop - cost me £6 or thereabouts. Two of mine often resist arrest and it's invaluable for catching them without causing the hens any stress. Our local chicken outlet always uses them for this reason. JS1
Thanks We've a fishing shop in the nearest town. She's already a favourite although she hasn't got a name yet.
