jill the potter
Aghhhhhhh. Went out about 4.45 to look up chicks - Tikka and Margot snuggled down and Barbara nowhere to be seen! Get a torch and start to hunt for her in the garden - not wanting to shout "chicken down!!!" like I normally do and then find her at the back of the eglu After 15 mins called for help - getting worried now as bid black cat has had a go a couple of times........ Oh searches around in the undergrowth, I get more worried, expecting to find a pile of feathers somewhere when Oh shouts "she up there!!!" and there she was sitting on the roof of the WIR, all fluffed up and ready for a nights sleep!!! Would she come down, no, I had to persuade her with a brush as I was worried she would go the wrong way and end up in the garden with the big scary dog! She was not happy to be disturbed (come to think of it the other two were a bit miffed at being disturbed and having a torch shone at them!!) So all's well that ends well. All three safely locked up, lesson learned to lock them up before dusk, and tomorrow we'll see about clipping some wings!!!

Charlottechicken
Glad you found her safe and sound! I wind mine down towards bedtime. They freerange for a while when I come home from work. Then they get put back into the WIR with treats, then I usher them through to the totally closed in run with the Eglu in it, about 30 to 15 minutes before bedtime. That way I know where they are if they are not in the Eglu when it's dark.
Peaches
I'm the same. I have a phased approach to getting them in if they've been free ranging. But we have one, Henrietta, who's a bolter - I think every flock has one with the adventuring gene - but even she can't resist the siren call of tinned corn! Chucky1
They are little monkeys aren't they. Glad it worked out OK this time. Chickens certainly take you through a roller coaster of emotions - worried, cross, amused and sometimes sad. Very nice site BTW. Good Luck
