chickweed
Can anyone recommend a suitable wool ? I knitted several pairs of socks last winter from cheap double knitting wool that I bought from Aldi. They were lovely and cosy but went into holes on the bottom after only 2 or 3 wearings. After each wash I ended up having to darn them. I suppose wearing them around the house as slippers didn't help, but after all the effort it took to make them I was none too pleased. Snowy
I usually buy the sock wool - Reggia is lovely, King Cole has a bit more acrylic in, not as nice to knit with but cheaper. Not had problems with holes so far.
Chucky Mama
I used normal double knitting and had the same problem - very disappointing
Mrs Webmuppet
I tend stick to using 'proper' sock wool, just finished a pair of socks knitted in Noro sock wool ( has added nylon to make it harder wearing). There are some lovely sock wools out there. The Dogmother
Follow Snowy's instructions - I have a pair of her gorgeous stripy socks, and they have never needed darning.

They were made from Reggia yarn, so it must be good!

grumpy100
I wouldn't recommend ordering wool online from web of wool. If you do a search on the internet, you'll find lots of people have had problems, paying for orders that are never delivered. I'm one of them, having ordered some sock wool from them 4 months ago, they've taken the money, but have not sent me my goods despite numerous chasers. If you paid by credit card and haven't done so already, contact the card company and tell them you dispute the payment because they haven't dispatched the goods to you..This should mean you get a credit back to your account whilst they Credit card company investigates...you should end up with your wool or the money back...good luck
..lay a little egg for me
I had the same problem even using proper sock wool. I think it was because the size was a little loose and I was wearing them with clog-type shoes in which my feet slipped slightly on each step so causing a lot of wear. I have now started putting a reinforced heel in my socks, which seems to have helped. I use the "eye of the partridge" stitch in which one does a row of slip one, knit one, then purl all the stitches back and on the next row do knit one, slip one. I do this for all the heel flap rows or short row heels, but I have to put more increases in the heel side to allow for the fact that my reinforced section tends to come up narrower. I have bought some sock wool from Drops design that was really nice and quite economical. It has 20% polyamide, which is supposed to help with durability.
