MissSilkie
i was wondering what the signs were if your hen was dying.
Steve the Gas
Strange question or is it me?....... Generally, listless, de-hydrated,not eating, not moving etc leading to not breathing.
MissSilkie
I know it is a bit weird but one of the hens isn't looking too good and i thinks she is dying. It probably is a weird question!
Guest
how old is she? if a hen is ill then she generally won't look or behave normally. some obvious signs are standing around looking miserable and hunched up, not eating/drinking, spending long periods in the nest box, being picked on by the other birds, feather loss, odd coloured/shaped/consistency of dropping. can you not be more specific about her symptoms? are you not thinking about taking her to the vet? MissSilkie
I thinkl she has coocidios. She has already had it on previous occasions and been to the vet. My dad thinks that she is dying seeing as he grew up with hens. She is pale and comb is purleish. She was never right again after having the coccidios. poor wee pet

Guest
she might not be dying, is taking her to the vets out of the question? when my chickens have been ill and I've thought they were on the way out I've just tried to make them as comfortable, quiet and warm as possible. Some I've taken to the vets to be PTS as i felt they were suffering but some I've made the decision to keep at home and, as I say, just make them as comfortable as I can. I think it's your call, if you think she's suffering then it might be kinder to take her to the vet but I'm sure you know in your heart what the best thing to do is for your girl. xxxxx

Egluntyne
Has she been wormed with Flubenvet recently?
MissSilkie
I put cyder vinegar in their water which is a natural wormer
Steve the Gas
Don't think the mighty Flub is gonna help here much.
Guest
my personal opinion of apple cider vinegar is that it's good for deterring or trying to prevent gut parasites but it's not a cure if the hen does contract worms. The only way to get rid of worms is with flubenvet.
sandyhas3chucks
please take her to the vet

Egluntyne
How is your hen this morning?
MissSilkie
Thanks to all the people who have posted I have made her comfortable and am going to let her go in peace. I think for me it is the best thing I could do seeing as the vets would just stress her. Thanks again
Plum
Glad she is peaceful but I have read that letting a chicken die of dehydration is very unpleasant for them. Is there someone who could despatch her for you
Steve the Gas
IMHO, letting any animal suffer when there is not much hope is not a good plan ..................
sandyhas3chucks
Hi, if she is still with you in the morning, it would be less stressful to take her to be put to sleep quickly. I had a very poorly hen (that was being treated by vet) she was up and down, however in her final down she was having spasm, and like fits, it was awful and very distressing all around, and a Sunday, and 3/4 hour to vet when she STILL did not die on the way It was very peaceful for her to go, bless her. I vowed then to take girls to the nearest vet, I could not "dispatch" my girls even if I had done the course, although that would be kinder to than just leaving. Actually I do put rabbits and squirrels caught by dogs out of their misery, so maybe if push came to saving someone I would! maybe
Steve the Gas
It's not a huge leap and less costly - but more painful, although I look at it as the best/quickest/humane thing to do. But only after everything has been tried that is applicable...
miller30
I dont take my chickens to the vets anymore as they are useless and they charge me £50 to put a chicken to sleep and im sorry i know they are my pets but im not paying that so my friend does the job for me i have known a chicken to take at least a week to die on their own so i would see if you can find someone to help her out as its not a very nice thing to watch good luck with what you decide leanne. Egluntyne
Do you know an experienced chicken keeper who could show you how to despatch her humanely?
beach chick
I do hope you've been able to take her to the vet by now, or find someone to do the deed humanely...
