Pikey
To put this as politely as possible ..... my pekin cockerel was once treading all the time.....nearly every time you looked out the window there he was servicing one of his girls....he even used to try with the big girls despite not quite reaching where he needed to......to the point OH commented he wanted to come back as a cockerel Recently however he seems to ceased all activity. Hes about 16 months old ......do they become less active with age ....the cold....or is there something more sinister going on??
The Dogmother
It's probably the lack of daylight hours - he's conserving his energy for keeping warm . Try them with a good quality poultry tonic in the water.
Egluntyne
Time of year. It'll give the hens a break. He'll be back to normal in the Spring.
Pikey
Thanks....at least not ill! Pity his voice didn't stop over the winter too
Patricia W
Phillip is only interested occasionally in the ex-bats. These are the only ones still laying so if your hens aren't laying that could be why he's not interested in them. I seem to remember he gave up entirely between November and Feb last year when I only had non-laying pure breeds. Let the boy conserve his energy for the spring! Daphne
The others are right, its because its winter and he will only be interested in laying hens. My boy gave up in September when he went into moult (even tho the girls were still laying). Now its got to the stage that he doesn't always get up in the morning with the girls but ambles out 10 minutes later, its as though there's nothing worth getting up for
craftyhunnypie
One of mine is nearly 4 & he is still producing children! It could just be the time of the year - too cold for bringing chickies into the world. ( says her that has some off heat waiting to go outside). LJ's Chooks
Our cockerell is so funny at the moment, he's like a lazy teenager, not interested, until of course there is the usual egg laying ceremony from one of the girls... then he seems to get all interested again!!! oh bless, having a cockerell is truely rewarding.... they are so funny! at least he's having a lie in and we dont hear him quite so early these days!!! Minkey
My Pekin cockerel Ernest is the same! The girls aren't laying & it's too cold to get too excited, they will be back to normal come spring time! Minkey x
