Migraine or Conjunctivitis?

Recommended Posts

Odd thing going on with my right eye, which started yesterday - hope you lot can help me work out what it is

It started at work about 5 hours into my 6 hour shift (I work in Waitrose,on the checkouts), with a twingy headache in my right temple. It got a little worse, but as I was near the end of my shift I didn't bother going & getting some Paracetamol. It was copeable.

Then, about 15 mins before I finished my daughter who was 3 tills away told me my right eye was very, very bloodshot. I checked,& it was rather pink, but not in the least bit sore. However I soon equated moving my eye to look up, with a nasty pain at the very back of it,which got steadily worse over the course of yesterday evening, until I took some Cocodamol, which dulled the pain a bit.

Slept like a log (thanks to the Cocodamol!),& woke late this morning,to a pink eye which now feels a bit gritty ,a little pain when I look up or to the right, but no headache :?

Last night I thought it was a Migraine, but now I am thinking maybe an eye infection?

I will go to the Docs as soon as I can tomorrow, but in the meantime what do you think?

Please don't think I'm being daft, but there is a virus going around which causes these symptoms..lots of us at work has had it, we all interpret the symptoms as..Migraine, Sinusitis, ear infection, but when we compare symptoms, they are all pretty much the same. I have vertigo anyway, and I had this with a one sided migraine-type headache..and now the OH has it! I did ring my GP, and he did tell me, yes there is a nasty virus going around......

Hope you feel better soon..

Hi Cinnamon,

It's not a migraine as that would not cause a red eye, and it's not conjunctivitis as that wouldn't cause a headache or pain to the back of the eye. It does sound very much like an inflammation to the conjunctiva, with the red eye and pain on movement. I would go and see your Dr or friendly Optom tomorrow for confirmation :)

Doesn't sound like conjunctivitis to me-I should know, I've had it...You usually just end up with gooey eyes, not fun. Sounds like you may well have got grit in your eye, causing it to be bloodshot as badly as it was-this has happened to Mum occasionally and although it looks bad it will soon get sorted.

Sounds like the start of a bug though.

I think that you should see a Doctor to get it checked out. There are all sorts of things that can happen to eyes (fortunately most clear up quickly with the right drops). If it was conjuntivitis it normally would be sticky as well, but it could be a forgeign body or a small ulcer, both would make it feel gritty. If its an infection of any sort you will need to throw away all your eye make that you've used recently, or it will come back.

Back with antibiotic eye drops BUT.................

Just phoned my daughters school,as she has a stinking headache & her house of 150 pupils has an unprecedented 34 pupils of today, all with the same thing : sore eyes, a dreadful headache, some nausea & cold-like symptoms. More are going home throughout the day - they are dropping like flies.

The House she she shares a base with (the secretary) has a similar number & she says she has never seen anything like it at the school before.

So,it looks like it could be a virus of some sort,as Sari said!

Well I think you've spread it round the forum now Cinnamon! My headache started this morning - suffered all day at work, couldn't wait to get home and take some paracetamol :( Had the stingy, gritty eyes as well :? I have to go and give a load of flu vaccines tomorrow - I hope that is all I give them!

Just call me Doctor Sari.....I'll see you now!

I'm off work atm, as my youngest has 'flu like virus, but she's a newly diganosed asthmatic, due to a huge allergic reaction she suffered in October....and she's ever so wheezy :( I went into work yesterday morning, but out of my class of 24, 9 were away.....and 6 in the next class. SO I came home to care for my daughter, as the child I support has this fluey bug too....... I feel yuck, just a dry cough and a head that wants to pop everytime I cough.....what a sickly bunch....hope we all feel better soon x x x

Hello, I'm a newbie and I'm excitedly awaiting arrival of my hens today, but I saw your post and just wanted to say, if it's not a virus, your symptoms sound quite like iritis/uveitis, which is something that I have suffered from in the past. If your eye is very sensitive to light and it's still bloodshot, feels gritty and you have a headache, then it could be this and it needs urgent treatment from a specialist ie at eye casualty, who will more than likely give you steroid eye drops and perhaps something to dilate your pupil which will reduce the pain.

Hope it's not this though, and hope you are feeling better.

No more eye pain, but thanks for that anyway :D

I have actually had something similar before, but always with my other eye,& often get a bad headache that side too,so wonder if it is exasperated by bright light, which would explain why I got it at the end of a long shift at work :?
