angusrose
Dear All, I acquired some ex-batts back in October. One has been a brilliant layer since day one, while the other has layed eggs everyother day or so. Recently though she has produced eggs with either no shell (ie yolk and white just run out of her vent) or with a very soft shell. I have tried supplementing their diet with the usual vitamins and tonics but to no avail. I haven't yet tried adding additional calcium. Is it worth trying this? Also, what are the causes of her condition? Regards Angus
sage
A small amount of limestone flour in the food will help. You can get this from most pet suppliers. Saying all this I have 6 girls all ex batts and I get about 1 shelless egss/softy a week. It varies as to who lays them. Good luck Sage
sandyhas3chucks
I started using calcivet from the bird care company, after ussing all the others this stuff is just brilliant
BocBoc
Our ex-batt Margot laid brilliantly for a few months after we got her but then slowed down, then came the intermittant softies, then nothing but softies then she stopped laying completely. Anna (our other ex-batt) is now following the same path - we get a tiny egg some days, some days we get a good normal one and sometimes we get a softie. I suspect she'll stop altogether in the next few weeks
sandyhas3chucks
I started using calcivet from the bird care company, after ussing all the others this stuff is just brilliant look guys I tried ALL the other calcium supplements before getting this stuff BUT I do urge you to talk to Malcolm regarding dosing... It would be improper for me to post how much I give my girls, I increased the dose every few days until they layed a decent shell then I try and maintain. However that said if the shell gland has had It, it is my understanding that nothing will help. These girlks come to us with virtually ZERO calciun reserves hence the easy breaks! Good luck
