When is it normal for a hen to start moulting?, 2 of my hens Sarah and Sara have only started now (19 th december)

You would think it would be logical for them to moult in the summer, wouldn't you! Afraid there's no rhyme or reason to it as far as I can see - moults just happen, so I don't think there's anything unusual in this for your girls.

Ours are still going through different stages. The last one started up last month and she is a little worse for wear. Everyone else seems to be doing it gradually but at least their backs, heads, tails and mostly the knickers are all new and fluffy. Some still have to replace their tummy feathers. And one is broody.

I was getting a bit worried about Baked who is moulting and looks like an old lady at the moment while Fried struts around with all her feathers intact. It really doesn't seem the right time for her to be moulting but since they both stay firmly inside the run with the tumble dryer hose pushing warm air into it (even when there is nothing to tumble dry - that's their dad going soft on them) she should stay warm enough ... They're off on holiday tomorrow for Christmas to a chicken boarding house where a nice breeder can keep an eye on them!

I've noticed just today that silly Fred has chosen now to start moulting.

Yep, we have one who came out of the cube this morning minus tail and knickers - seems to have shed them over night by the look of the droppings tray

I have one in full moult, who actually wasn't coping with the cold very well, (see my other post). The vet suggested that perhaps with this very cold spell their bodies are thinking that their current feathers aren't enough and they need a whole new warmer set - whatever the reason, it's a bad time of the year to be out in only your underpants
