Yesterday we realised that we were running out of hen food (I always like at least half a bag spare) and I'd forgotten Omlet's pre-Christmas delivery cutoff date...

 

Today we hit on a cracking idea - we were on our way back from Buckinghamshire to Manchester when I remembered we were not too far away from Omlet's HQ. A quick call later and we turned up at Omlet where we got our food (and Quinn and James were kind enough give my car a push as it was stuck in the snow - cheers guys! )

 

It saved us from having to mix up some porridge oats and corn!

 

The big question is though - what would you use as emergency hen food?

I'd probably use porridge, weetabix, fruit and veg if it were for 2 days max. More than that I'd have to get some from somewhere. I do have corn though so I guess I could feed them that with any of the above. I wouldn't want to do it though. I normally go overboard on the amount of food I have but it's a fine balance between having enough and it going past its best before date.

I dont think I have ever completely run out, I have horse food for the rhea so would probably feed that, if I was limited to something from the house it would probably be cat food or tuna

I was having this stress last night. having ordered 2 bags of mash from Wiggly and it hadn't arrived! I started to mix corn with the remained I had just to spread it out. Luckily the delivery man arrive late yeaterday evening. Pheww!

Oh goodness, am waiting for my Wiggley Wigglers as well, not panicking just yet, do have Garvo Alpha mix if needed but would rather keep this for treat time.

Wiggleys have said my 4 sacks have left the warehouse so hopefully they are on there way

No I don't spoil mine. No fresh veggies, corn on the cob, 'home made waterproof cube duvet', for my girls!!

Ours only eat them off the stalk, chopped up...

ours are obsessed with bananas - you literally can't eat one in front of them without being mobbed...

Same goes for blueberries!

I did run out of food once, for half a day! I gave them 2 bowls of fruit and fibre (I picked out the banana chips and coconut, wasn't sure that would suit!)

Mine have developed a total banana fetish too. I guess I could mix some in with a bit of museli and some apple, or is that just too human? Perhaps cooked brown rice would be better than museli

Lovely son hauled a sack of feed home for me (well, for the chooks really ) yesterday - not their usual pellets but I was so close to finishing the sack that I didn't dare wait til the next delivery, in case there isn't one in All This Weather. Now wondering anxiously if they will actually EAT the new stuff...Tomorrow all shall be revealed. If it's a "No" things could get interesting
