blackgold
I spent a couple of hours this afternoon with my edging spade, chipping frozen hen poo out of runs. The runs are flagged and even with a good layer of wood shavings the poo still sticks to the floor in places. I defrosted their water glugs first time in a week because I have bben putting in smaller water containers as they need changing so often. The glugs are heavy to carry when frozen. I let all my hens out but they didnt leave the yard, snowy frozen grass doesnt do it for them. I had to lack myself in the runs to be able to clean out or they would have been in the way. Moved all the bales of straw and found my very first orpington egg. Have made all the stack level now and it is wall to wall so if they lay up there now the eggs cant fall behind. The eglu nestbox had a couple of eggs but I think my grils prefer high level laying . They are only about 3 feet off the ground now and have used an old dressing gown over the bales to stop them pooing straight onto the clean straw. .Took a couple of pics when the orpingtons went to bed up there, they look really snug as there is lots of loose bedding up there as well. I love the smell of fresh straw. Roll on the warmer weather when they can all go out on the lawns, my new exbatties havent even seen grass yet. jackie45
I would like to see some green plants and I am sure the girls would like to find some grass. We have had snow since the end of November and its been rare that the temperature has been in positive values. The poor girls have been spending their time in my little greenhouse and going back to the chookery when it starts to get dark. The two youngest, Dotty and Esmeralda are real troopers - usually two eggs a day. Roll on the Spring but I think there will be lots of floods before then. best wishes for the New Year Jackie
sparkysmum
I know how you feel. I was so happy last night when I could see the road for the first time in a month. Went to bed dreaming of going for a run and woke up to .....................another 4 inches of snow We're cut off again. Would run away if I could get out of the street Alli xx
megalin
Yes it is so exhausting when it's cold and snowy, it's nearly thawed here in London and they finally came out of the run for a wander around gobbling up any bits of green as if i've been starving them!! Roll on the spring, I feel sick all the time and think the girls feel rough too. We need the sun!
