Chicken-y Treats

Recommended Posts

Has anyone got any good recipes for chicken treats? My girls seem to be bored of just rooting around and I would love to find something other than corn, fruit or veg to give them. I heard about Chicken porridge made with layers pellets and was wondering if anyone knew the recipe?

Also, is there anything we can do to make them less bored? We put a bench in their pen so they can climb up on it and survey their land, and a couple of tree branches to perch on, but has anyone thought up some revolutionary idea to banish poultry boredom?

Much appriciated, as always

I make chicken porridge just by warm water and pellets then add mealworm crumble, wheat, mixed corn bit of poultry spice or tonic and stuff like that. I add more cold water to get it to lukewarm and they love it but it does fill their tummies quickly. If you give them a bowl of layers mash it takes them longer to eat it. :D

I have a dustbath in the run which is just a square of wood filled with earth, sand, diatom and leaves. That keeps them occupied and they like to perch on the edge for a chat.

I also put obstacles in the run so they can feel they are moving into different areas and away from each other and when I get round to it I'll put woodchip and aubiose in the areas so they get different textures as well.

Otherwise like you I've got logs and perches and hang up veg. :D

Chickens are normally happy with just corn, fruit and veg, along with the occasional spider or worm! I have never, ever had a chicken be bored of any of the things we give them - yes it is repetitive, but chickens don't seem to care about having a variety of food. Food is good, and that's that, according to chickens (I reckon). :D If you really want to cook them something you can give them porridge, maybe with friut mixed in, but our chickens prefer ordinary fruit, veg and corn, so that's what we give them.
