Poorly chicken, advice needed please

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I've not posted on here for quite a while as our chooks have thankfully been well and thriving. However, now one of our Gold Lace Orps (only just in point of lay) is seemingly under the weather :( For the last couple of days my other half has noticed that she's very listless, and doesn't want to run around with the other girls. She usually runs away frmo us when we go near but she was just standing very still, and let us both pick her up and do anything to her, which she never does. She's staying in her coop and yesterday he noticed she had very runny eyes, which he cleaned for her using tissues, trying to dry them for her but they kept watering. He couldn't see anything in her eyes but they are both very runny. He's separated her from the other chickens and has eaten a little bit of food. We've put some citradel in her water (in all of their water, infact) but she doesn't seem to be drinking so don't think it will work. He said she looked very pale. We've been at my parent's for new year and am dreading going back as I am worried we will find a dead chicken :(

Does this sound like a normal cold or should we be worried? It's been 2 days now.

If her eyes are runny it could be Mycoplasma. That needs antibiotics from the vet to get rid of, Tylan is the best antibiotic for it but Baytril is fine too

Move her to a more sheltered area if possible, a rabbit hutch or cage in the house or in a warmish garage and feed her some corn to help keep her warm

if its mycroplasma I have just been through all of this 2 of my girls sneezing with bubbly foamy eyes. took 2 lots of baytril and are all better. I also added acv to water and garlic powder to food. I didnt seperate and none of the others became unwell thankfully. I did clean the poorly girls eyes and noses every day with saline as I didnt likethem trying to look through bubbly eyes :) I know some antibiotics can be mixed with food but I chose to give baytril by syringe because then I was sure they got the correct dose. Initial consult and meds from vet approx £28 then second lot of baytril £12 and still had lots left unuses that I have kept. So didnt work put as expensive as I had worried it would. let us know how you get on
